Vietnam, a country renowned for rice exports, imported rice worth up to $1 billion in the first nine months of 2024. This marks the first time in Vietnam's history that rice imports have reached this billion-dollar mark.

During the same period, Vietnam exported 7 million tons of rice, earning $4.37 billion, an increase of 9.2% in volume and 23.5% in value compared to the previous year.

Since the beginning of the year, rice imports have increased by 154.2%, costing $117 million. The total cost of rice imports in the first nine months was $996 million, a 57.3% increase compared to the previous year and higher than the $860 million recorded in 2023.

If this trend continues, rice imports could reach $1.3 billion by the end of 2024.

Although Vietnam is the world's second-largest rice exporter, it still imports rice to meet diverse production needs, such as ingredients for cakes, vermicelli, pho, and other consumer demands.
