In March 2024, a majority of EU member states proposed to reduce or suspend the application of the EUDR regulation, amid concerns that the law could hurt EU farmers by preventing them from exporting products from deforested land. This year, the EU reduced some environmental protections to ease farmers’ protests over environmental policies and cheap imports, which have drawn criticism from environmental activists.

The EUDR requires companies importing certain products such as soy, beef, and coffee to prove that their supply chains are deforestation-free or face hefty fines. Companies are required to create digital maps of their supply chains, including identifying the origins of ingredients from small, remote farms. Some argue that this is too complex given that global supply chains involve millions of farms and many intermediaries whose data is difficult to verify.

Eurocommerce, which represents the European retail industry, has thanked the EC for listening to its concerns about compliance and the risk of disruption to supply chains. Brussels believes the EUDR is needed to stop deforestation, which is one of the main causes of climate change, second only to the burning of fossil fuels.

Arabica coffee price for December 2024 delivery increased by 0.20 cent/lb, at 252.25 cent/lb, and for March 2025 delivery increased by 0.35 cent/lb, at 250.85 cent/lb.

Logistical difficulties in the US have affected coffee prices on the market. A dock workers’ strike has caused hundreds of containers of coffee to back up in warehouses, potentially increasing consumer prices.

High interest rates have discouraged US importers from stockpiling large quantities of goods, leading to record low inventories. Strikes could make matters worse, according to comunicaffe. The London market's decline could be due to the strong performance of the previous season.

Container shortages have helped support coffee prices, especially in Uganda, Rwanda and Kenya during the export season. Port congestion in Djibouti and Ethiopia, along with storms in Asia, has caused delays and container shortages, affecting freight shipments.
