October 17, 503 (September 12, year of the Goat):The birth date of King Ly Nam De. The king's real name was Ly Bi, and he was from Long Hung district, Thai Binh province. He was a talented man in both literature and martial arts, and was respected as a local leader. In 542, he led the people to revolt and attack the Liang army that was occupying our country. In 544, he ascended the throne, took the reign name Ly Nam De, named the country Van Xuan and established the capital in Long Bien. He died in 548.

October 17, 1634:The death date of the famous scholar Dao Duy Tu. Dao Duy Tu was born in 1572 in Hoa Trai village, Ngoc Son, Tinh Gia, Thanh Hoa. He was well-versed in the classics, astrology, and military strategy. He was highly regarded by Lord Sai Nguyen Phuc Nguyen and appointed as the Royal Advisor.

October 17, 1808:Cao Ba Quat's birthday. He was born in Phu Thi village, Gia Lam district, Hanoi. He was a talented person but due to the jealousy of the mandarins, he only passed the bachelor's exam. Dissatisfied with the court in many ways, in 1854, he participated in the peasant uprising movement led by Le Huy Cu, which rose up in My Luong (present-day My Duc, Chuong My, Hanoi). The uprising failed and Cao Ba Quat died in 1855.

October 17, 1887:The French colonialists completed their invasion of our country, unifying North Vietnam, Central Vietnam, South Vietnam and Cambodia into what was called the "Indochinese Federation". In 1893, they also annexed Laos.

October 17, 1954:Indian Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru visited Vietnam. This was the first time a foreign Head of State visited Vietnam since the August Revolution in 1945.

October 17, 1972:The 4,000th American plane was shot down in the North. This was a typical feat of arms of the army and people of Tien Chau commune, Yen Lang district, Vinh Phu province (Vinh Yen city, Vinh Phuc province today).

October 17, 2000:Responding to the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty, the Central Committee of the Vietnam Fatherland Front launched the campaign “Day for the Poor” and officially announced October 17 of each year as “Day for the Poor”, and organized the “Peak Month for the Poor” from October 17 to November 18 of each year.

October 17, 2019:The National Assembly Standing Committee established a delegation to supervise the "Implementation of Free Trade Agreements (FTAs) of which Vietnam is a member".

October 17, 1604:Astronomer Johannes Kepler observed a star in the constellation Ophiuchus, later called the Kepler supernova.

October 17, 1849:Polish composer Frederic Chopin passed away. Born in 1819, Chopin began studying piano from a young age. At the age of 19, he began composing music. At the age of 20, he left Poland to live in France as a music teacher. Chopin's works are of many genres: for orchestra, for chamber music and mainly for piano. Some of his pieces express anger, resentment and nostalgia for his enslaved Polish homeland. Chopin was also an innovator in piano performance methods in the fields of harmony and arrangement.

October 17, 1979:Mother Teresa was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for her work to overcome poverty in India.

October 17, 1987:On the first International Day for the Eradication of Poverty, about 100,000 people gathered at the “Patio of Human Rights and Freedoms” at the Place du Trocadéro, Paris, France, to honor the victims of poverty, hunger, violence and fear, following the call of Father Joseph Wresinski (1917–1988).

October 17, 2003:Taipei 101 in Taiwan dethroned Petronas Towers in Malaysia to become the tallest building in the world at that time.
