Coffee trading in Vietnam has been sluggish as traders await new supplies from the next crop. However, this also reflects the market’s anticipation that the majority of new coffee production will arrive in the coming months. Notably, although farmers have begun harvesting some Arabica coffee, the output is still very small and not enough to serve the international market.

Meanwhile, Robusta coffee prices in the international market have slightly decreased in recent trading sessions. According to a Reuters report, Vietnam's coffee output in the 2024/2025 crop year may decrease by 5% to 10% compared to the previous crop year. This has caused coffee prices at the beginning of the 2024/2025 crop year to remain high, with coffee prices in the Central Highlands always above VND110,000/kg, nearly double that of the previous crop year.

Despite facing many challenges, the Vietnamese coffee market still has many opportunities for sustainable development in the future. Maintaining high export prices and focusing on potential consumption markets are strategies that coffee businesses need to focus on.

Online Coffee Prices

At the end of the most recent trading session, the price of Robusta coffee in London for November 2024 delivery increased by 7 USD/ton, at 4,692 USD/ton, and for January 2025 delivery increased by 9 USD/ton, at 4,607 USD/ton.

Arabica coffee prices for December 2024 delivery increased by 2.05 cents/lb to 257.20 cents/lb, and for March 2025 delivery increased by 1.90 cents/lb to 255.75 cents/lb.

Coffee prices are currently falling due to stable supplies. The European Commission has decided to extend the implementation of the Anti-Deforestation Law by 12 months. Large importers will start complying with the law from 30 December 2025. Micro and small businesses have until 30 June 2026 to comply with the law.

The delay will allow stakeholders to prepare for the inspection to ensure that products are not linked to deforestation. Products affected by the new law include: cattle, timber, cocoa, soybeans, palm oil, coffee and rubber.

Despite high coffee prices, the Vietnamese coffee industry is still facing challenges from climate change and new EU laws. These challenges may affect Vietnam's coffee production and exports in the future.
