A total of 11,005 Honda CR-V, Civic and Civic TypeR vehicles are subject to recall in Vietnam due to steering wheel errors. However, the solutions for domestically produced and imported vehicles are different.

The Vietnam Register has just issued two consecutive recall notices for many car models assembled and distributed by Honda Vietnam (HVN). Specifically, a total of 11,005 affected vehicles are Honda CR-V models (both gasoline and hybrid versions e:HEV RS), Civic, Civic Type R. This is a recall program based on the global recall campaign coded 6JP by Honda Motor Japan.

Of these, 5,910 Honda CR-Vs are assembled domestically by HVN, 1,194 Honda CR-V e:HEV RS hybrid versions imported from Thailand with production dates from September 18, 2023 to September 25, 2024. In addition, there are 3,870 Honda Civics imported from Thailand, manufactured between November 3, 2021 and November 17, 2023. The remaining 31 Honda Civic Type R vehicles are imported from Japan.

According to the announcement from the Department of Registration, the recalled vehicles may have an unusual noise or vibration when turning the steering wheel. The explanation for this phenomenon is that the amount of lubricating grease in the screw transmission of the steering rack is reduced during use, leading to increased friction and a sticking phenomenon that leads to vibration when turning the steering wheel.

To fix the problem, Honda vehicles subject to recall must be brought to authorized HVN dealers to have the steering rack, spring/spring base/end cap replaced and greased to the correct standards. The acceptance period starts from now until November 5, 2029.

Although the error is the same, the time to fix each car model is different. With the Honda CR-V assembled in Vietnam, each car only takes about 30 minutes to fix. Meanwhile, with cars imported from Thailand such as the CR-V e:HEV RS, Civic and Civic TypeR, the fix time is nearly 4 hours.

This is the largest recall of cars affected by HVN in 2024. Previously, in the international market, Japanese carmaker Honda also issued a recall for a similar defect. In the US alone, the number of affected cars has reached nearly 1.7 million.

Honda is one of the Japanese car manufacturers with the highest sales in Vietnam. According to a report by the Vietnam Automobile Manufacturers Association (VAMA), in the first 3 quarters of 2024, HVN sold 17,654 cars of all kinds, an increase of 17% over the same period last year.
