Mong Cai pig, a precious breed of pig native to Quang Ninh, has long been famous as a typical OCOP product of the province. However, this breed of pig was once at risk of extinction due to crossbreeding.

From 2021-2025, the Department of Science and Technology of Quang Ninh province will coordinate with the Vietnam Academy of Agriculture to implement the project "Conserving Mong Cai pig genetic resources in Quang Ninh province". The project aims to restore and develop purebred pig breeds through the application of genetic technology, reproductive support and modern nutrition.

On an area of 3 hectares, Van Thanh Phat Cooperative in Hai Yen ward, Mong Cai city has built a model of raising organic Mong Cai pigs and producing high-quality breeds.

This cooperative is a pioneer in applying Japan's JAS (Japan Agricultural Standard) organic standards - a strict standard recognized globally for quality and sustainability.

According to Ms. Dang Thi Lien, Director of the Cooperative, Mong Cai pig products here strictly follow the JAS standard process, from animal care, organic food, to natural farming methods. Pigs only eat food grown on the farm, including vegetables, tubers, and fruits such as cassava, corn, bananas, and jackfruit, combined with sea fish, ensuring nutrition and meeting organic standards.

The cooperative also commits to not using chemicals or antibiotics in the farming process, helping to protect human health and the environment.

Each year, the cooperative supplies the market with more than 500 Mong Cai pigs, including 100 organic pigs. With a selling price of VND250,000/kg of organic pigs and VND1.5 - 2 million/pig, the cooperative earns hundreds of millions of dong in revenue each year, while contributing to the preservation of the local precious pig breed.
