Food prices in Gaza have increased by more than 1,000%.
According to the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), bakeries in central Gaza are having to close and reopen intermittently due to shortages of flour and fuel.
TASS reported on November 30 that the prices of basic food items in the Gaza Strip have increased more than tenfold, according to a report by OCHA.
"Amid a deepening hunger crisis in Gaza, the World Food Programme (WFP) says that prices of basic food items have increased by more than 1,000% compared to pre-conflict levels," the report states.
According to OCHA, bakeries in central Gaza are constantly opening and closing intermittently due to shortages of flour and fuel. "Bread is a lifeline for many families in Gaza, as it is often the only food they have access to," the agency emphasized.
The report also indicated that, "in the northern Gaza Strip, including Gaza City, a severe shortage of cooking gas is forcing families to burn garbage for fuel, which increases the risk of respiratory infections, while healthcare services are extremely limited."
According to TASS, tensions in the Middle East flared up again on October 7, 2023, when Hamas fighters, based in the Gaza Strip, launched a surprise attack on Israeli territory from Gaza, killing many residents in Israeli border settlements and taking hostages. In response, Israel launched a military operation to eliminate Hamas's military and political wings, as well as to free the hostages.
