Vinh City participates in the "6th International Conference on Learning Cities" in Jubail, Saudi Arabia

The 6th International Conference on Learning Cities took place over four days (2-5 December) in Jubail, Saudi Arabia. The event was co-organized by the UNESCO Institute for Lifelong Learning (UIL) and the Industrial City of Jubail, a member of the UNESCO Global Network of Learning Cities (GNLC).

The event brought together nearly 1,200 delegates from more than 300 learning cities in 79 countries of the UNESCO Global Network of Learning Cities, along with policy makers, experts and relevant organizations.

The Vietnamese delegation attending this conference has 3/5 cities that are members of the Cities Network.global learningincluding Sa Dec city (Dong Thap province), Son La city (Son La province) and Vinh city (Nghe An province).

Themed “Learning Cities Leading Climate Action”, the conference takes place against the backdrop of climate change being declared a “red level” emergency for people and the planet. Communities around the world are suffering its devastating impacts, including the loss of animal and plant ecosystems, deadly heatwaves, erratic rainfall patterns, droughts and floods.

These and many other challenges posed by climate change require sustainable solutions, especially as they impact the lives, services, infrastructure and livelihoods of many urban communities.

The conference aims to raise awareness of the potential of learning cities to pioneer action on climate change.

This conference will also provide an opportunity for members and other stakeholders to gather, strengthen relationships and share experiences in developing learning cities.

The conference will provide participating cities with the opportunity to exchange knowledge on climate action and showcase projects aimed at improving community resilience to current and future environmental crises.

During the conference, there were 5 plenary sessions, 2 mayoral forums and 14 parallel sessions. The Vinh City delegation with 3 members, led by Ms. Tran Thi Cam Tu - Vice Chairman of the City People's Committee, delivered a speech at parallel session No. 7 with the theme "Narrowing the digital gap for older adults in learning cities".

The speech shared with international friends an overview of Vinh city, the achievements the city has made in recent years, the challenges in narrowing the digital gap for the elderly and solutions to narrow the digital gap for the elderly in Vinh city.

The speech in the parallel discussion session No. 7 of Vinh city was acknowledged by the head of the session's executive committee and highly appreciated Vinh city's efforts in narrowing the digital gap for the elderly.

Previously, on September 21, 2020, UNESCO awarded the certificate of recognition.Vinh city becomes a member of the "Global Learning Cities Network".This is the honor and pride of Vinh city in the process of developing the city into the North Central region's center in the field of education and training./.
