In the first 11 months of the year, Vietnam imported a total of 32,977 tons of pepper. Of which, black pepper accounted for the majority with 28,978 tons, while white pepper reached 3,999 tons. The total import turnover reached 155.3 million USD, up 34.7% in volume and 92.6% in value over the same period last year.
Indonesia is currently the largest pepper supplier to Vietnam in the past 11 months, with a total volume of 14,123 tons, accounting for 42.8% of total imports. In contrast, imports from Brazil decreased sharply, reaching only 9,203 tons, down 39.9% compared to the same period last year.
Vietnam’s pepper imports are on the rise in both volume and value, especially from major markets such as Indonesia. However, the decline from Brazil raises the issue of diversifying supply sources and developing a long-term import strategy to ensure market stability.
World pepper price today
Update on world pepper prices from the International Pepper Community (IPC), at the end of the most recent trading session, IPC listed the price of Indonesian Lampung black pepper at 6,841 USD/ton (up 2.02%), and the price of Muntok white pepper at 9,141 USD/ton (down 0.08%).
The price of Brazilian ASTA 570 black pepper is at 6,275 USD/ton. The price of Malaysian ASTA black pepper is at 8,200 USD/ton; the price of this country's ASTA white pepper is at 10,400 USD/ton.
Vietnamese black pepper prices today decreased slightly, trading at 6,200 USD/ton for 500 g/l; 550 g/l at 6,500 USD/ton; white pepper prices at 9,300 USD/ton.
According to data from the Brazilian State Center for Foreign Trade Statistics (Comex Stat), Brazil exported 4,302 tons of pepper in November, up 18.8% from the previous month. However, this figure decreased sharply by 43.5% compared to the same period last year.
Brazil's total pepper exports in the first 11 months of the year reached 57,290 tons, down 21.8% (equivalent to 15,987 tons) compared to the same period in 2023.
Despite the decrease in output, Brazil's pepper export turnover still reached 227.6 million USD, up 13.3% over the same period. This was thanks to the high average export price of pepper, reaching 4,501 USD/ton, a sharp increase of 45%.
Brazil’s pepper production last year was severely affected by the El Nino phenomenon, which caused a sharp decline in output. However, in recent years, the pepper cultivation area in Brazil has been on an upward trend, suggesting that the country has the potential to produce a larger crop from 2025 onwards.
