History of Vietnam vs. Thailand in the AFF Cup
The history of clashes between the Vietnamese and Thai national teams in the AFF Cup has always been dramatic and captivating. Tiger Cup 1996
This was the first ASEAN Cup (Tiger Cup 1996). In the semi-finals, Vietnam faced Thailand. Thailand won 4-2 with a brace from Natipong Sritong-In, along with goals from Kiatisak Senamuang and Worrawoot Srimaka.
For Vietnam, Nguyen Hong Son and Vo Hoang Buu were the goal scorers. Despite the loss, this marks the first time Vietnam has reached the semi-finals of the tournament.
Tiger Cup 1998
The tournament was held in Vietnam. In the semi-finals, the Vietnamese team performed excellently, defeating Thailand 3-0.

The goals were scored by Truong Viet Hoang, Nguyen Hong Son, and Van Sy Hung.
However, in the final match, Vietnam lost to Singapore and finished second.
AFF Cup 2002
Under the guidance of coach Alfred Riedl, the Vietnamese national team performed impressively in the group stage, scoring 19 goals and topping the group.
However, in the semi-finals, the team faced Thailand and were defeated heavily 0-4, ending their dream of winning the championship.
AFF Cup 2007
The two teams met in the semi-finals in a two-legged format. In the first leg at My Dinh Stadium, Thailand won 2-0 thanks to goals from Suchao Nuchnum and Pipat Thonkanya.
In the second leg, the two teams drew 0-0, allowing Thailand to advance to the final with an aggregate score of 2-0.
AFF Cup 2008
This was a historic AFF Cup for the Vietnamese national team as they won the championship for the first time. In the group stage, Vietnam lost to Thailand 0-2.
In the final, the two teams faced each other again. In the first leg, Vietnam won 2-1 thanks to goals from Vu Phong and Le Cong Vinh.
In the second leg, Thailand took a 1-0 lead thanks to a goal from Teerasil Dangda. However, in the 90+4th minute, Le Cong Vinh scored the equalizer, making it 1-1 and giving Vietnam a 3-2 victory overall, securing the championship title.

AFF Cup 2012
Under the guidance of coach Phan Thanh Hung, the Vietnamese national team did not perform successfully. In the group stage, the team lost to Thailand 1-3 and was eliminated early. This was a forgettable tournament for Vietnamese football.
AFF Cup 2020
The tournament was postponed for a year due to the COVID-19 pandemic and was held in a centralized location in Singapore. The Vietnamese team, the defending champions, easily advanced through the group stage.
However, in the semi-finals, the team lost to Thailand with an aggregate score of 0-2 after two legs (losing 0-2 in the first leg and drawing 0-0 in the second leg).
AFF Cup 2022
The two teams will face each other again in the final. In the first leg at My Dinh Stadium, Vietnam drew 2-2 with Thailand thanks to goals from Nguyen Tien Linh and Vu Van Thanh.
In the return leg, Thailand won 1-0 thanks to the only goal scored by Theerathon Bunmathan, thus securing their 7th championship title with an aggregate score of 3-2.
