Coach Shin Tae-yong has been fired.
The Indonesian Football Federation (PSSI) has announced the dismissal of head coach Shin Tae-yong following the Indonesian national team's failure in the 2024 ASEAN Cup.
The official PSSI website announced the news, stating: "The Indonesian Football Federation will announce the termination of Shin Tae Yong's contract as head coach of the Indonesian national and U23 teams."
According to President Erick Thohir, the evaluation of Shin's performance has been underway for the past 1.5 years. And following the failure at the 2024 AFF Cup, the Indonesian Football Federation officially made the decision.
CNN Indonesia quoted chairman Erick Thohir as saying: “Of course, we would like to thank Mr. Shin for what he has done so far. My relationship with him is very good, and we are working hard towards our desired plans. Mr. Sumardji met with Coach Shin Tae-yong this morning and received his letter. Of course, there will be a further process regarding our relationship, and I thank him for everything.”

The Indonesian Football Federation is looking to hire European coaches. President Thohir wants to realize the World Cup dream while simultaneously conquering the AFF Cup for the first time in history. It's worth remembering that Indonesia has never won the top Southeast Asian tournament. This year, the Vietnamese national team convincingly won the tournament, while Indonesia was eliminated in the group stage.
According to PSSI's assessment, although the Indonesian national team used a young squad, they were still capable of advancing beyond the group stage of the 2024 AFF Cup. The team from the archipelago was in the same group as Laos, Myanmar, Vietnam, and the Philippines. Coach Shin's team lost two matches against Vietnam and the Philippines, drew with Laos, and won against Myanmar. With only 4 points, they were eliminated in a bitter defeat on home soil.
Indonesian football team manager Sumardji also met directly with Shin Tae Yong following the PSSI's decision. Sumardji believes Shin Tae Yong can accept this decision.
He told Bola Sports: "I had a meeting with Shin Tae Yong. Thank God, everything went well, smoothly, without any problems. Mr. Shin Tae Yong accepted the termination of his contract with PSSI. Shin Tae Yong is very grateful for the trust placed in him over the past five years."
A notable highlight of coach Shin Tae-yong's time in Indonesia is the gold medal in men's football at the 32nd SEA Games, along with the victory against Saudi Arabia in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers. Additionally, the Indonesian U23 team reached the semi-finals of the 2024 AFC U23 Championship.
