January 16, 1912:Dr. Tran Duy Hung's birthday. He was a doctor, and served as Deputy Minister of the Interior and Deputy Minister of Health of the Government of the Democratic Republic of Vietnam. On August 30, 1945, Mr. Vo Nguyen Giap - Minister of the Interior of the Provisional Revolutionary Government signed a decree appointing Dr. Tran Duy Hung as Mayor of Hanoi. After October 10, 1954, he returned to Hanoi to assume the position of Chairman of the City Administrative Committee (later the People's Committee) and was trusted to hold this position until June 1977. He died on October 2, 1988.

January 16, 1909:The expedition of Douglas Mawson, Edgeworth David, and Alistair Mackay claimed to have first found the South Magnetic Pole, which was then located on land. The Earth's South Magnetic Pole is a point on the Earth's surface where magnetic field lines point vertically upward. The South Magnetic Pole is constantly moving due to changes in the Earth's magnetic field. In 2005, it was located very close to the coast of Wiles Land, Antarctica. That point lies outside the Antarctic Circle. Due to magnetic drift, the pole moves northwest about 10 - 15 km per year.
