At his daughter’s birthday party, Hung gave his father-in-law money to buy drugs. After receiving the money from his son-in-law, Phuong went to buy drugs and sent them by bus, but was discovered by the police.

On January 16, the People's Court of Nghe An province opened the first instance trial of the defendants Thai Ba Hung (born in 1998), residing in Dien Bich commune, Dien Chau district, and Vi Van Phuong (born in 1970), residing in Chau Hoan commune, Quy Chau district, for the crime of "Illegal drug trafficking". The two defendants have a father-in-law - son-in-law relationship.

The indictment shows that on the afternoon of June 24, 2024, Thai Ba Hung organized a birthday party for his daughter on her 2nd birthday and invited a number of people to attend, including his father-in-law, Vi Van Phuong.

Here, Hung gave his father-in-law 90 million VND to buy 30 packages of pink drugs to sell for profit. The ward agreed and told his son-in-law that when he bought them, he would send a bus down.

On July 6, 2024, Phuong went to the mountainous area of Quang Phong commune, Que Phong district, and met a man named Phuc (unknown identity and background) who ordered 30 packages of pink drugs. The seller told Phuong to stay for a few days and wait to receive the "goods".

On the evening of July 8, Phuong gave Phuc 75 million VND and received the drugs. After that, Phuong slept at the camp until dawn the next day before going down the mountain to go home.

To avoid detection by authorities, Phuong hid drugs in boiled bamboo shoots and sent them by bus.

On the afternoon of July 12, at the park area of Dien Chau town, after Hung received a bag of bamboo shoots containing 600 grams of drugs, he was discovered and caught red-handed by the Drug Crime Police Department of Nghe An Province Police. Based on Hung's statement, the police arrested Vi Van Phuong.

At the trial, the two defendants admitted to the crimes as charged in the indictment. Defendant Phuong stated that he committed the crime because his son-in-law asked him to buy drugs.

Defendant Hung admitted that he asked his father-in-law to buy opium to bring home to sell. However, the defendants' actions were exposed.

Both defendants expressed remorse and asked the court to consider reducing their sentences. Defendant Hung presented his illness and young child to ask the court to give him the lowest sentence.

The panel of judges determined that the actions of the two defendants violated the law. The defendants were fully aware but still committed crimes out of greed, so they should be severely punished.

Considering that in this case the two defendants had equal roles, the court sentenced Thai Ba Hung and Vi Van Phuong each to 20 years in prison.
