Man lost nearly 500 million VND after being called by a person pretending to be a police officer

Knowing that Mr. D. used an iPhone, the person impersonating a police officer asked him to switch to using an Android phone to update his personal identification number.

Thanh Xuan District Police (Hanoi) said that recently, a man in the area lost nearly 500 million VND when installing fake public service software.

Specifically, Mr. D. (born in 1985, living in Thanh Xuan district) received a call introducing himself as the police of Thuong Dinh ward (Thanh Xuan district). This person informed that he needed to update the personal identification number of Mr. D's son.

After that, the subject made an appointment for Mr. D. to go to the district police station to guide him through the procedures. When Mr. D. came to the headquarters to contact, the subject replied that he was not at the office and informed him that he would guide him through the registration of his child's identity over the phone.

When he learned that Mr. D. was using an iPhone, the subject asked him to switch to using an Android phone. He did as requested and accessed the fake public service website sent by the subject.

When he finished checking his bank account, Mr. D. discovered that nearly 500 million VND was missing. He went to the police to report the incident.

Hanoi City Police advise people to be vigilant against the above tricks. Absolutely do not install software or applications as requested by strangers calling.
