Despite being divorced, Ha always forbade his ex-wife from having romantic relationships with others and repeatedly demanded that she remarry. When she refused, Ha fatally stabbed his ex-wife.

On January 23, the Nghe An Provincial People's Court sentenced Nguyen Van Ha (born in 1980), residing in Dien Hong commune, Dien Chau district, to life imprisonment for the crime of "murder". In addition, the court ordered the defendant to compensate each of the victim's parents 58 million VND for emotional distress and provide monthly support of 1 million VND to each of them.

According to the indictment, Nguyen Van Ha and Tran TN (born in 1983, residing in Dien Thap commune) married in 2002 and had two children together. In 2018, due to irreconcilable differences, they divorced, and the two children lived with Ha.

Despite being divorced, Ha was always jealous and wouldn't allow his ex-wife, N., to have a romantic relationship with any man. His baseless jealousy was so intense that in February 2023, Ha even attacked N. with a knife, causing injuries, after seeing his ex-wife talking to another man. He was fined by authorities for that offense. Even so, he continued his blind jealousy.

Accordingly, on the afternoon of October 16, 2024, wanting to find Ms. N. to ask her to return and live together, Ha rode his motorbike to the company where his ex-wife worked (in Dien Truong commune, Dien Chau district). Before leaving, Ha took a knife with him, thinking that if Ms. N. did not agree, he would stab her.

At 7:20 PM, upon seeing Ms. N. traveling on National Highway 1A, Ha asked his ex-wife to stop the car to talk. Ha said, "You abandoned your child to have an affair for several years, now come back and live with your child." Ms. N. disagreed, leading to an argument between the two.

Suddenly, Ha stabbed his ex-wife multiple times, causing her death on the spot. After committing the crime, Ha discarded the weapon and fled to Vinh City. That same night, Ha surrendered to the Nghe An Provincial Police.

At the trial, the defendant admitted to the murder. Regarding the motive, the defendant stated that he wanted his ex-wife to remarry so that "the child would have both a father and a mother." When Ms. N. refused, the defendant became angry and lost control of his actions.

Attending the trial, the victim's legal representative requested that the defendant be tried according to the law. Meanwhile, the defendant's son asked the court to consider mitigating circumstances for his father.

The court determined that the defendant, Nguyen Van Ha, was fully capable of bearing criminal responsibility. Because his attempts to salvage their relationship failed, he used a knife to stab his ex-wife multiple times, resulting in her death. The defendant's actions were exceptionally serious, violating the health and life of another person protected by law, and causing public outrage. Therefore, the court sentenced the defendant to the aforementioned punishment.
