World gold prices
As of 3:30 PM, the world gold price listed on Kitco was at $2,943.13 per ounce, an increase of $24.14 per ounce compared to the same time in the previous session.
Global gold prices rose sharply despite a decline in the US dollar. As of 6:30 AM on March 13th, the US Dollar Index, which measures the fluctuations of the US dollar against six major currencies, reached 103.550 points, up 0.27%.
Gold prices hit a two-week high, boosted by a US inflation report showing a lower-than-expected consumer price index (CPI). Demand for safe-haven assets like gold and silver remains strong due to concerns that global trade tensions could slow economic growth.
Gold futures for April delivery rose $20.40 to $2,941.30 per ounce, while silver futures for May delivery gained $0.538 to $33.68 per ounce.
The US CPI report for February showed the consumer price index rose 2.8% year-on-year, lower than the predicted 2.9%. The producer price index (PPI) report was expected to rise 0.3% for the month, lower than the 0.4% increase in January. Following the release of the CPI data, the US dollar largely reversed its gains from the previous session.
US stock indices recovered in midday trading but remained below their intraday highs, pressured by earlier sell-offs. Investors remain concerned about the ongoing changes in US tariff policy and potential retaliatory measures from trading partners.
WTI crude oil prices on the Nymex exchange rose, trading around $67.75 per barrel. The yield on 10-year US Treasury bonds was at 4.3%.
Gold price forecast
Technically, the April gold futures price indicates that buyers remain in control in the short term, aiming to push the price above the resistance level of $2,974 per ounce. Sellers are targeting a move below the support level of $2,844.1 per ounce.
Gold's nearest resistance is at $2,950 per ounce, followed by $2,974 per ounce. Meanwhile, key support levels are at $2,911 per ounce and $2,900 per ounce.
Some experts believe that although gold prices may not rise sharply immediately after the inflation data is released, they still have the potential to increase rapidly in the near future. Neils Christensen from Kitco predicts that current inflation levels could push the spot price of gold to $3,000 per ounce.
Besides inflation, the gold market is also heavily impacted by trade tensions. Europe's retaliatory tariffs following the US tariffs on steel and aluminum have raised investor concerns about the risk of escalating trade tensions.
Investors are also awaiting a call between US President Donald Trump and Russian President Putin regarding a 30-day ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine. If geopolitical tensions ease, gold may lose its upward momentum.
