According to the Vietnam Coffee and Cocoa Association (VICOFA), Vietnam's coffee export turnover has exceeded the 2 billion USD mark in just the first 2.5 months of the year. In particular, in the first 15 days of March, the sharp increase in world coffee prices has significantly increased Vietnam's export turnover.

Brazil and Vietnam are the world's two largest coffee producers, accounting for nearly 50% of global output. Meanwhile, the European Union and the United States are the largest coffee consuming and importing markets.

According to the International Coffee Organization (ICO), global coffee production in the 2023/24 crop year is forecast to fall by 20% compared to the forecast, especially in major producing countries such as Vietnam and Brazil. In addition, the development of the food and beverage industry in major markets such as the US, Europe and China also boosts the demand for coffee imports.

Coffee is one of the most consumed and traded commodities in the world. The coffee industry provides livelihoods for around 25 million farmers and millions of jobs across the value chain. For many low-income countries, coffee exports are an important source of foreign exchange, allowing them to import essential goods and services.

Coffee prices are currently under profit-taking pressure after the US dollar strengthened against other major currencies. At its recent policy meeting, the Fed decided to keep its benchmark interest rate unchanged at 4.25%-4.50%, while it is expected to cut rates by 0.25 percentage points twice later this year.

Global coffee production in 2024/25 is expected to increase by 4% year-on-year to 174.855 million bags, according to the USDA report. However, ending stocks are forecast to decline by 6.6% to a 25-year low.

In addition, Volcafe predicts a global arabica market deficit of 8.5 million bags in the 2025/26 crop year, higher than the 5.5 million bag deficit in the previous crop year.

A lack of rain in Brazil is threatening coffee production, especially in the Minas Gerais region, the country’s largest arabica producer. Rainfall for the week ending March 15 was only 71% of the historical average, according to Somar Meteorologia. High temperatures and low rainfall in February are also expected to negatively affect this year’s coffee crop.
