Faced with the serious deterioration of the pumping station system along the Lam River, the Department of Agriculture and Environment has implemented a project to upgrade and install three new pumping stations in Do Luong, Thanh Chuong and Anh Son districts. Currently, these pumping stations have been completed and handed over in time to irrigate crops and spring rice.

According to the Department of Agriculture and Environment of Nghe An, many pumping stations along Lam River belong to districts Do Luong, Thanh Chuong, Anh Son have seriously degraded and are operating ineffectively. With combined funding from programs, the Department has upgraded 3 pumping stations with a total cost of over 35 billion VND. The pumping stations include: Trung Son pumping station (Trung Son commune, Do Luong district), Cat Van 2 pumping station (Cat Van commune, Thanh Chuong district) and Vinh Phu pumping station (Linh Son commune, Anh Son district).

The upgrade project started on October 25, 2024 with the main items including: Rebuilding the suction tank, assembling new machinery systems, building an operating house, and combining the construction of a canal system over 15 km long connecting from the pumping station to irrigate the rice fields.

After nearly 5 months of construction, by March 28, 2025, the pumping stations were completed and put into use, promptly irrigating hundreds of hectares of crops and spring rice.

Nghe An has more than 500 pumping stations, most of which are managed by communes, built from 1970-1990, but only over 50 have been upgraded. Most of the remaining stations have not been renovated or repaired to continue operating. Currently, many pumping stations are seriously damaged, failing to meet the needs of irrigation and natural disaster prevention and control.

In order to meet the demand for irrigation water, the People's Committee of Nghe An province is proposing to borrow over VND593 billion from the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) to upgrade 60/74 pumping stations along the Lam River. The districts benefiting from the project include: Anh Son, Thanh Chuong, Do Luong, Hung Nguyen and Nam Dan. The project is expected to be implemented from 2025-2028 and put into operation from 2029.
