What categories of driver's licenses are there?

Ms. Nguyen Thi Uyen, residing in Vinh City, asks: What are the different categories of driver's licenses? Where are they regulated?

Reply:

According to Clause 1, Article 57 of the 2024 Law on Road Traffic Order and Safety, driver's licenses include the following categories:

- Class A1 license is issued to drivers of two-wheeled motorcycles with a cylinder capacity of up to 125 cm³.³or have an electric motor power of up to 11 kW;

-Class A is issued to drivers of two-wheeled motorcycles with a cylinder capacity exceeding 125 cm³.³or have an electric motor power exceeding 11 kW and the types of vehicles specified for the A1 driver's license;

-Class B1 is issued to drivers of three-wheeled motorcycles and other types of vehicles specified for Class A1 driver's licenses;

-Class B licenses are issued to drivers of passenger cars with up to 8 seats (excluding the driver's seat); trucks and specialized vehicles with a total design weight of up to 3,500 kg; and vehicles specified for Class B licenses that tow trailers with a total design weight of up to 750 kg;

- Class C1 licenses are issued to drivers of trucks and specialized vehicles with a total design weight of over 3,500 kg to 7,500 kg; trucks specified for Class C1 licenses that tow trailers with a total design weight up to 750 kg; and vehicles specified for Class B licenses.

- Class C licenses are issued to drivers of trucks and specialized vehicles with a total design weight exceeding 7,500 kg; trucks specified for Class C licenses that tow trailers with a total design weight up to 750 kg; and vehicles specified for Class B and Class C1 licenses.

-Class D1 is issued to drivers of passenger cars with more than 8 seats (excluding the driver's seat) up to 16 seats (excluding the driver's seat); passenger cars specified for Class D1 driver's licenses that tow trailers with a total design weight up to 750 kg; and vehicles specified for Class B, C1, and C driver's licenses.

-Class D2 is issued to drivers of passenger cars (including buses) with more than 16 seats (excluding the driver's seat) up to 29 seats (excluding the driver's seat); passenger cars specified for Class D2 driver's licenses that tow trailers with a total design weight up to 750 kg; and vehicles specified for Class B, C1, C, and D1 driver's licenses.

- Class D licenses are issued to drivers of passenger vehicles (including buses) with more than 29 seats (excluding the driver's seat); sleeper buses; passenger vehicles specified for Class D licenses that tow trailers with a total design weight of up to 750 kg; and vehicles specified for Class B, C1, C, D1, and D2 licenses.

- Class BE licenses are issued to drivers of motor vehicles specified for Class B driver's licenses that tow trailers with a total design weight exceeding 750 kg;

-Class C1E is issued to drivers of motor vehicles specified for Class C1 driver's licenses that tow trailers with a total design weight exceeding 750 kg;

-Class CE is granted to drivers of motor vehicles specified for Class C driver's licenses that tow trailers with a total design weight exceeding 750 kg; and tractor-trailer combinations.

- Class D1E is issued to drivers of motor vehicles specified for Class D1 driver's licenses that tow trailers with a total design weight exceeding 750 kg;

-Class D2E is issued to drivers of motor vehicles specified for Class D2 driver's licenses that tow trailers with a total design weight exceeding 750 kg;

- Class DE licenses are issued to drivers of motor vehicles specified for Class D licenses that tow trailers with a total design weight exceeding 750 kg; and passenger vehicles with attached trailers.
