When your car's coolant level drops, it can lead to serious problems like overheating. Here are some signs to help you recognize when your car is running low on coolant.

The engine is overheating.

According to Bryan Fuller, an automotive engineer at Fuller Moto (USA), when a car is low on coolant, the engine will quickly overheat and may exceed safe temperatures. If the temperature gauge on the dashboard rises rapidly or reaches the red mark, that's a clear sign of low coolant.

Temperature warning on the dashboard

Most modern vehicles have coolant temperature sensors. When the coolant level is low, a warning light or a "Check coolant level" message will appear. Mark Davidson, an expert at Mechanic Base (USA), emphasizes that this is a sign that should not be ignored, as the engine can be seriously damaged if it continues to operate without sufficient coolant.

There's a sweet smell coming from the engine compartment.

Coolant typically contains ethylene glycol, a compound with a distinctive sweet odor. If you notice this smell while the car is running or after it has stopped, there is likely a coolant leak from the hoses or radiator. A small leak may not have immediate consequences, but if left untreated, it will lead to significant coolant loss.

Coolant is leaking under the car.

If you see a puddle of green, orange, or pink liquid under your car after parking, it could be a sign of a coolant leak. The leak could be coming from the radiator, hoses, or coolant pump. Prompt inspection and repair will help avoid serious damage.

Steam or white smoke coming from the hood

When there isn't enough coolant, the engine can overheat and cause water vapor or white smoke to emanate from the engine compartment. This is a sign that the cooling system is no longer working effectively. David Long, a vehicle maintenance expert at AutoBytel, advises that if you see this, turn off the engine immediately and check the coolant level.

These signs are early warnings of low coolant. If you notice any of these symptoms, check your coolant level immediately and add more if necessary. Also, inspect your cooling system for leaks and repairs. Ignoring these signs can lead to serious engine damage and unnecessary repair costs.
