Vinh TTH General Hospital: Hearing restoration for patients with perforated eardrums by endoscopic surgery
Last March, the ENT Department of Vinh TTH General Hospital successfully performed endoscopic tympanic membrane repair surgery for patient NTL.
Restore hearing to patients with perforated eardrums
Patient NTL (32 years old), residing in Dien Chau district, Nghe An, was admitted to the hospital with tinnitus and hearing loss. Upon examination, doctors discovered that the patient's eardrum had a hole, leading to tinnitus and hearing loss.
After consultation, the ENT doctors decided to perform endoscopic surgery to patch the patient's eardrum using an Underlay flap to help recreate the anatomical structure of the eardrum and restore hearing.
Master Doctor Phan Tung Son - Head of ENT unit and his team performed endoscopic tympanic membrane repair for the patient. The surgery took only 1 hour.
Currently, after nearly 30 days of surgery, the patient's health has stabilized, the tinnitus is gone, and hearing has returned to normal.

What is the eardrum?
The eardrum is a thin layer of tissue, similar in structure to the skin tissue of the body, that forms a wall between the outer ear canal and the middle ear. The eardrum is usually gray in color, oval in shape, slightly concave in the middle, and tends to tilt slightly behind the ear.
The eardrum plays a very important role in human hearing, helping to sense the vibrations of sound waves from the outside, then converting them into nerve impulses and transmitting them to the brain, thereby helping you hear and recognize sounds. In addition, the eardrum also helps protect the ear from the invasion of bacteria or foreign objects, and prevents water from flowing into the ear.

When a hole or tear appears in the eardrum, it is called a perforated eardrum. A perforated eardrum can lead to a high risk of hearing loss. It can even make your middle ear more susceptible to infection.
Can a perforated eardrum heal on its own?
In fact, a perforated eardrum can still heal itself if the degree and size of the hole is not too serious. The eardrum heals itself in cases where the hole is small, not infected or only infected for a short time and is treated stably. If the hole is infected repeatedly, does not heal itself, and forms a fibrous ring at the hole, surgery is the only treatment method to restore the anatomical structure of the eardrum as well as improve hearing function.

With the Underlay tympanic membrane flap endoscopic surgery method, a wider field of vision, enhanced imaging capabilities and increased magnification as well as ways to view difficult-to-see parts of the middle ear are created; helping to increase treatment effectiveness.
With a small, aesthetic incision, the patient has almost no ugly scars after surgery, shortens the number of days in hospital, the wound heals faster than open surgery, regenerates the eardrum, and restores hearing to the patient.

Three days after surgery, patient L was discharged from the hospital in stable health condition, and his symptoms had completely improved. When the patient returned for a check-up one month after surgery, the eardrum had completely closed the hole, and his hearing had returned to normal.

Master Doctor Phan Tung Son - Head of ENT unitsaid, the problem that determines the success of the surgery is choosing the right surgical method. With endoscopic tympanic membrane repair surgery, it is the method that brings the most practical benefits today. Through endoscopic tympanic membrane repair surgery, the patient's hearing will be restored, and they can walk and take care of themselves immediately after 1 day of surgery.
