After being confronted by a friend over the phone about assaulting his friend's pregnant wife, Tran Tuan Huy took a knife to confront him. In the middle of the night, Huy fatally stabbed his friend and then turned himself in to the police.
On April 23, the People's Court of Nghe An province opened a trial session for defendant Tran Tuan Huy (born in 1995), residing in Ben Thuy ward, Vinh city (Nghe An province), on the charge of murder.
Tran Tuan Huy and Pham TT (born in 1994, residing in the same locality) were friends. Late on the night of August 3, 2024, Huy and T. went to sing karaoke, and T. went home first.
At approximately 11:30 PM that same day, Mr. T.'s wife arrived at the karaoke bar, and that's when the incident occurred.conflictwith Huy. During the argument, Huy hit his friend's wife. Others intervened, and both went home.
Upon learning that Huy had assaulted his wife, at 0:06 AM on August 4th, T. called Huy, scolding him, "Why did you hit my wife just now?" and demanding that he come to the gate. Believing that T. had come to his house to fight, Huy took a sharp knife, tucked it into his waistband, and went to stand in front of his house gate.

Mr. T. had just arrived at Huy's house, opened the trunk of his motorbike, and started cursing. Seeing Mr. T. open the trunk, Huy thought his friend was getting a weapon, so he pulled out a knife and stabbed Mr. T. in the chest.
After being stabbed, Mr. T. ran away. Huy chased after him, but Mr. T. turned around and stabbed Huy in the side and back. When Mr. T. fell, Huy stabbed him again in the back.
The victim ran a short distance before falling a second time. After falling, T. told Huy, "You stabbed me." Thinking his friend was faking it, Huy said, "Whatever," and kicked T. At this point, Huy saw that his friend was bleeding profusely, so he stopped hitting him.
Afterward, Huy called an ambulance and took Mr. T. to Nghe An Provincial General Hospital for emergency treatment. However, due to the severity of his injuries, Mr. Pham TT passed away. The cause of death was determined to be acute respiratory and circulatory failure due to multiple wounds that punctured his lungs and severed his liver.
After learning that his friend had passed away, Tran Tuan Huy surrendered to the police and confessed to all his crimes. Authorities conducted a psychiatric evaluation of Huy, concluding that he suffered from mental and behavioral disorders before, during, and after committing the crime.
At the trial, the defendant testified that he had been drinking beer that day and therefore was not in control of his actions. When questioned by the court about the reason for committing the crime, the defendant replied, "I don't remember."
Following the incident, the defendant arranged for his family to compensate the victim's family with 215 million VND. At the trial, the victim's family demanded that the defendant pay over 1.5 billion VND in compensation.
The panel of judges noted that in this case, the defendant had mitigating circumstances such as surrendering to the authorities, showing remorse, having limited cognitive abilities and control over his actions; and having influenced his family to compensate the victim's family with 215 million VND.
After considering all aspects of the case, the court sentenced Tran Tuan Huy to 17 years in prison for murder. Regarding civil matters, the court ordered the defendant to compensate the victim's family with over 268 million VND, and to provide monthly support of 1.2 million VND to each of the victim's three children until they reach the age of 18.
