Ho Chi Minh City 50 years: Proud imprints through the pages of Saigon Giai Phong Newspaper

‏The project systematizes information from the first publications of SGGP Newspaper - dated May 5, 1975, depicting the proud marks of Ho Chi Minh City in the reconstruction, construction and development over the past 50 years with a dynamic, innovative and creative spirit, affirming the pioneering role of Ho Chi Minh City for the whole country, with the whole country.

Born right after the liberation of the South, with the advantage of being the only daily newspaper published in Ho Chi Minh City at that time and decades later, SGGP Newspaper of the Party Committee, government and people of Ho Chi Minh City has become the "secretary of the times", vividly reflecting all aspects of daily political and social life of Ho Chi Minh City over the past half century.

With this data project, readers can clearly imagine the excitement and joy of the people of Saigon city in the first days of liberation; the difficulties, challenges and great efforts of the Saigon - Gia Dinh Military Management Committee in maintaining security and order, reviving the new life of a chaotic post-war urban area, which just yesterday was the enemy's headquarters with many consequences and remnants left behind.

Through this elaborate data project, readers can review the developments and proud marks through 11 Congresses of the Ho Chi Minh City Party Committee; with drastic decisions, activities, and key projects that changed the face of the city.

Through the project, the data is digitized, presented visually, and the information is diverse. SGGP Newspaper hopes to bring readers the proud and unforgettable historical memories of the Party Committee, government, and people of the city named after beloved Uncle Ho over the past half century. The project is presented in multimedia form, from Longform, Infographic, video... to help readers easily experience. The project was launched on SGGP Online Newspaper on April 23, 2025. We will continue to exploit the valuable 50-year data warehouse of SGGP Newspaper to bring readers information on all aspects of the journey of innovation and development of Ho Chi Minh City in particular and the whole country in general. The project also demonstrates the responsibility of SGGP Newspaper in the era of the country's rise, towards the goal of Vietnam becoming a developed, high-income country by 2045.

At the launch, Deputy Editor-in-Chief in charge of SGGP Newspaper Nguyen Khac Van said: SGGP Newspaper has an extremely valuable treasure, which is the content of about 17,000 SGGP issues published over the past 50 years. And this is our first data journalism project to exploit this treasure, serving readers on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the Liberation of the South and National Reunification. We have been digitizing all SGGP paper issues, to create multimedia data journalism products to serve the public, or to serve the search/lookup/research work of organizations and individuals in need.

In this work, we strongly use AI tools, with integrated AI assistant groups including: integrated text-to-speech applications; recovering lost/damaged files or pages; automatically extracting image features (face recognition, general scene features, people features, vehicle features, etc.); extremely fast search according to requested content.

Attending the launch, comrade Nguyen Manh Cuong, member of the Standing Committee of the City Party Committee, Head of the Propaganda and Mass Mobilization Department of the Ho Chi Minh City Party Committee, commented that the project gathers many valuable documents accumulated and stored by SGGP Newspaper from the first issues until now, creating a publication that not only serves readers, but is also a valuable source of documents and data, effectively serving research and synthesis work.

The project is even more meaningful when it is completed and launched on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the Liberation of the South and National Reunification Day, and at the same time, towards the 50th anniversary of the first issue of SGGP Newspaper (May 5, 1975 - May 5, 2025). "The project is a milestone, a mark affirming the effectiveness in carrying out the tasks of the newspaper", the Head of the Propaganda and Mass Mobilization Department of the Ho Chi Minh City Party Committee commented and expressed that the method and approach to implementing the project are very suitable for the current trend of digital transformation of newspapers.

From this result, SGGP Newspaper needs to continue to promote and focus on accessing, processing, restoring and digitizing data, along with clearly defining production and operational methods that apply artificial intelligence (AI), in order to further promote the development of SGGP Newspaper in the coming time.

Comrade Nguyen Manh Cuong commented that the work that SGGP Newspaper has carried out has distilled, analyzed and evaluated in a vivid and practical way, contributing to enriching the content of the comments, assessments and conclusions of the Standing Committee of the Ho Chi Minh City Party Committee. The sources of documents from this work very well meet the requirements of summarizing and concluding in terms of theory to serve the common political tasks of the City. Thereby, supporting the advisory and support agencies of the Ho Chi Minh City Party Committee to perform well the task of advising the Standing Committee of the City Party Committee in leading and directing the political tasks of the city.

‏Comrade expects that, from the specific and meaningful results of the project, SGGP Newspaper will continue to make stronger strides in the digital transformation roadmap of journalism. Through the massive archive of documents and scientific approaches in the project, the Newspaper also needs to continue to review and synthesize to exploit more rich materials, to better serve the leadership and direction of the Standing Committee of the Ho Chi Minh City Party Committee.

The Head of the Propaganda and Mass Mobilization Department of the Ho Chi Minh City Party Committee affirmed that he will always accompany and create favorable conditions for SGGP Newspaper to continue to develop, meeting the requirements and expectations set by the Standing Committee of the Ho Chi Minh City Party Committee. "The 50th anniversary of the first issue of SGGP Newspaper is an extremely important milestone for the newspaper to redefine its position and continue to move forward steadily on the upcoming journey", comrade Nguyen Manh Cuong confided.
