USD/JPY exchange rate today 5/6/2025
The Japanese yen made modest gains on the day, helping the USD/JPY pair recover slightly from levels below 144.00. One of the main reasons the yen was unable to continue its strong gains was the dovish stance of the Bank of Japan (BoJ) at its meeting last Thursday, which limited investors from betting on a near-term interest rate hike.

However, the Japanese Yen is still supported by its role as a safe haven as the market is concerned about the geopolitical situation and US tax policy.
China’s willingness to negotiate trade with the US has raised hopes of easing tensions, while President Donald Trump has thrown markets into turmoil again by announcing a 100% tariff on foreign-made films.
The situation in the Middle East has also worried investors. The Israeli prime minister has vowed to retaliate against the Houthis after an attack near Ben-Gurion airport. In response, Iran has warned of a counterattack if attacked. At the same time, Russian President Vladimir Putin has asserted that Russia has the power to bring the war in Ukraine to an end, continuing to maintain global tensions.
Despite the BoJ's dovish stance, rising inflation in Japan and an improving wage outlook could prompt the bank to reconsider its policy in the future.
Meanwhile, the dollar struggled to maintain its recovery momentum despite US employment data showing the economy created 177,000 jobs in April, far exceeding expectations. The unemployment rate remained at 4.2%.
The positive numbers suggest that the U.S. labor market remains strong, even as the economic outlook is weighed down by tax policy and inflation. Traders have postponed expectations for a Fed rate cut to July from June. Still, the policy differential between the Fed and the BoJ still favors continued support for the yen.
The market is now focusing on the two-day monetary policy meeting of the US Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC), starting on Tuesday, which will be a key factor in determining the next direction of the USD and JPY.
