Russian air defenses respond to drone attack targeting Moscow.
According to RT, at least 19 enemy drones were shot down while en route to the Russian capital.
In a series of Telegram posts early on May 6, Mayor Sergey Sobyanin stated that Moscow had repelled a multi-wave drone attack from Ukraine.
Specifically, Sobyanin stated that five drones were intercepted at 1:16 a.m. Another was shot down about 30 minutes later, followed by three more at nearly 2 a.m., all of which were en route to Moscow.
"According to preliminary information, there were no casualties or serious injuries," the mayor stated, adding that emergency forces were working at the scene of the drone crashes and "all necessary measures are being taken."
At 2:17 a.m., Sobyanin reported that air defense forces "destroyed 10 more drones flying toward Moscow from different directions," bringing the total number of intercepted UAVs to at least 19.
Moscow's Domodedovo, Sheremetyevo, Vnukovo, and Zhukovsky international airports were temporarily closed in response to the attack.
This week, Russia will celebrate the 80th anniversary of its victory over Nazi Germany in World War II. President Vladimir Putin ordered a unilateral three-day ceasefire during the commemorative events, but Ukrainian leader Zelensky refused to do the same, saying Kyiv would accept nothing less than an unconditional 30-day ceasefire.
According to RT, Zelensky and other Ukrainian officials have hinted at threats targeting the military parade to be held in Moscow on May 9th, an event that will be attended by foreign dignitaries. Russia has condemned these remarks as evidence that Ukraine is using terrorist tactics.
