400 tests, 200 inspections: Vinamilk redefines the standard for fresh milk in Vietnam.

Consumers are increasingly prioritizing transparent and safe food. Vinamilk has chosen to proactively incorporate rigorous international standards into its Green Farm fresh milk products, contributing to establishing a new benchmark for the domestic market.

International certification: from “clean” to “transparent”

For many years, the criteria for "clean" or "premium" in the dairy industry were often understood subjectively – attractive packaging, big brand, or taste. However, new consumer trends are forcing businesses to prove themselves with data and certifications. Today's consumers are not only concerned about whether the milk tastes "good," but also want to know: how the cows were raised, what kind of grass was grown, and whether there are any chemicals or antibiotic residues.

Faced with this trend, Vinamilk chose a long-term approach: adopting highly binding international certifications such as the Clean Label Project (a non-profit organization based in the US) – which tests over 400 chemical, residue, and micronutrient indicators in food. With its Green Farm fresh milk product, Vinamilk is the first company in Vietnam – and among the first in the world – to achieve this certification for its fresh milk line.

Notably, many indicators in the Clean Label Project have safety thresholds 3 to 125 times stricter than Vietnamese standards. Furthermore, the organization tests for factors not yet covered by Vietnamese regulations, such as the concentrations of BPA, phthalates, and acrylamide – substances that can affect hormones and long-term health. Choosing to "test at the highest level" even when the market doesn't require it demonstrates Vinamilk's approach of setting its own standards before the market forces them to change.

Jaclyn Bowen, CEO of the Clean Label Project, stated: "Consumers are increasingly demanding higher quality and transparency in the information provided by the products they trust and choose. This is especially true for children's food, as this group requires even greater attention to quality and safety standards. The Clean Label Project awards recognize brands whose products prioritize the purity of their ingredients. Therefore, we highly appreciate the efforts and proactive approach of businesses like Vinamilk in consistently setting higher standards for children's dairy products."

In addition to the Clean Label Project certification in the US, Green Farm has also been awarded...Gold Award at Monde Selection– a Belgian-based food quality assessment organization with a history of nearly 65 years. Each year, approximately 3,000 products from over 90 countries are submitted for evaluation.

To win the award, Green Farm milk underwent an independent evaluation with over 200 tests, ranging from visual, olfactory, and gustatory assessments to physicochemical and microbiological composition. The judging panel consisted of culinary experts, scientists, and technicians from various European countries. As a result, Green Farm achieved the necessary score to be awarded the Gold prize – the highest rating in the organization's scoring system.

Building a standardized ecosystem – instead of just being "better than others".

Achieving international certifications requires not only technology but also a standardized operating ecosystem. This is why Vinamilk invested in the Green Farm ecological farm system since 2021, with a total investment of $130 million. Currently, there are 4 Green Farms in operation, of which 3 farms meet Global GAP standards and 1 farm meets European Organic standards.

These farms are designed to control inputs from land and water to animal feed. The land is left fallow for three years to regenerate its fertility and remove chemical residues. The cows are fed organic grass and grains, without the use of antibiotics, growth hormones, or reproductive stimulants – factors that can directly affect milk quality. As a result, Green Farm fresh milk products are certified to meet the "5 No's" standard: no growth hormones, no pesticide residues, no heavy metal residues, no preservatives, and no plant protection chemicals.

Furthermore, the distinctive flavor of Green Farm fresh milk is created by carefully tailored feed rations for each individual cow, combining 20 types of naturally sourced grasses and seeds. Vinamilk then applies dual vacuum packaging technology to production, helping Green Farm products retain their flavor and nutrients without the need for preservatives. This combination of human expertise and technology has helped Green Farm win the "Superior Taste Awards," often considered the "Michelin star" of the food industry.

Instead of appealing to emotions, they set new standards for the market.

The current fresh milk market is still primarily competitive through media, emotional positioning, and promotional programs. In this context, Vinamilk's decision to invest in scientifically-based standards is a less flashy move but one that creates a strong ripple effect. Once consumers have formed the concept that "fresh milk must have independent testing and publicly available safety indicators," the game in the market will no longer revolve around advertising – but around data and the true nature of the product.

Speaking to the press, a Vinamilk representative stated that the company's strategy is to "stay one step ahead," proactively establishing standards instead of simply following market demands. This is how the company controls quality throughout the entire chain, minimizes management risks, and most importantly, strengthens consumer trust.

For a leading company like Vinamilk, the question is no longer "how to be better than the competition," but "how to lead change in the industry." When quality becomes a mandatory competitive factor, standardization is the only way to maintain a long-term position, especially in the context of increasingly stringent legal frameworks on food safety in Vietnam.

Green Farm is a prime example of an "investment at the root" model – where standards aren't just for show, but are a real, verifiable, and scalable operating system. As the fast-moving consumer goods industry enters a phase of competition based on standards, businesses that choose to invest early may hold a sustainable advantage for the next 5–10 years.
