The US dollar index (DXY), which measures the greenback's strength against six other major currencies, edged up 0.21% and is currently trading around 101.09.

The US Dollar Index (DXY) rose slightly for the fourth consecutive week, despite mixed US economic data this week.

A report from the University of Michigan showed that consumer sentiment in May fell sharply to 50.8, the lowest since June 2022, indicating weakening household confidence. At the same time, inflation expectations soared, making the US economic outlook dim.

Specifically, the Current Conditions index fell from 59.8 to 57.6, while the Consumer Expectations index fell from 47.3 to 46.5. One-year inflation expectations rose to 7.3% from 6.5%, and five-year expectations rose to 4.6% from 4.4%. These figures reflect concerns about rapidly rising prices again.

Earlier on Thursday, data showed that the producer price index (PPI) unexpectedly fell in April, while retail sales rose just 0.1% after a sharp increase in March, adding to the view that US economic growth is slowing.

Meanwhile, President Donald Trump’s unpredictable statements on tariff policy continue to cause concern. He said the US will soon impose unilateral tariffs on many countries, raising the risk of disruption to global trade flows.

However, DXY still maintained its upward momentum during the week, thanks to the market's risk-off sentiment and the wait for further signals from the Federal Reserve (Fed).

The market is now pricing in a 51.1% chance of a September rate cut, with expectations for more cuts continuing through 2026. There are no longer any predictions of a Fed rate hike in the near term.
