Many drivers are careless when stopping or parking their cars in the wrong direction on the road, especially in residential areas or small streets. However, according to new regulations that will take effect from 2025, this behavior can be punished with a higher fine than before.

In many urban areas, stopping and parking cars in the opposite direction of traffic is still quite common. Many people think that on inner-city roads with little traffic, parking in any way is fine. However, parking in the opposite direction not only obstructs traffic but also poses a risk of accidents, especially in conditions of limited visibility or when re-entering the lane.

Previously, the Road Traffic Law 2008 clearly stipulated that drivers must stop close to the right curb in the direction of traffic when stopping or parking on the road. At the same time, stopping or parking on the left side of a one-way street or in places that obstruct visibility or obstruct other vehicles is prohibited.

According to the old regulations in Decree 100/2019/ND-CP, the act of stopping or parking against traffic will be fined 400,000 - 600,000 VND. However, from January 1, 2025, this fine has been increased according to Decree 168/2024/ND-CP (Decree 168).

Specifically, at point d, clause 2, article 6, Decree 168, drivers who park their cars against the traffic flow of the lane will be fined 600,000 - 800,000 VND. Compared to the previous fine, the new regulation has been tightened to thoroughly handle the situation of stopping and parking cars arbitrarily, causing traffic obstruction.

Not only that, in some cases of stopping or parking in the wrong location, such as parking in the wrong place on a road section with designated stopping and parking areas causing traffic accidents, the driver will be fined 10 - 14 million VND. This penalty is clearly stated in point b, clause 10, article 7, Decree 168.

Increasing the fine for illegal stopping and parking, including parking in the wrong direction, is necessary and appropriate in the context of many unfortunate collisions and accidents that have occurred due to the carelessness of some drivers. To avoid being fined and, more importantly, to ensure traffic safety, drivers should strictly comply with the regulations, especially always stopping and parking in the correct direction of traffic.
