Export rice prices remain stable, but Thailand faces competitive pressure from Vietnam and India.
Vietnam's rice export prices remained stable today, while Thailand faced challenges from declining demand and high prices, potentially leading to its lowest rice exports in years in 2025.
On June 20th, according to the Vietnam Food Association (VFA), the price of Vietnamese 5% broken rice remained at $387 per ton in the export market. Meanwhile, 25% broken rice and 100% broken rice both decreased slightly by $1 per ton, to $361 per ton and $317 per ton respectively.
In the region, the price of 5% broken rice from Thailand remains higher at $396/ton; Pakistan is at $392/ton; while India has the lowest price at $381/ton.
According to the latest report from the US Department of Agriculture (USDA), Thailand's rice exports in 2025 are expected to reach only 7 million tons, the lowest in many years. The main reason is that Indonesia has significantly reduced imports thanks to increased domestic production and large stockpiles since the beginning of the year.
Although Thai rice production may increase this year, beginning stocks are currently low – the lowest level since 2005. Furthermore, Thai white rice is more expensive than that from Vietnam, India, and Pakistan, while the strong Thai baht makes exports even less competitive. This has led to sharp declines in exports to key markets such as the Philippines and Malaysia, down 61% and 65% respectively, in the first four months of the year.
Nevertheless, Thailand maintains an advantage in the premium segment thanks to product lines such as fragrant rice and parboiled rice. Demand in markets such as the US, China, Iraq, and South Africa remains stable, helping to somewhat offset pressure from mainstream markets.
