GrandfatherTang Van An:Closely following the forecast situation and actual climate developments, it shows that since the beginning of the year, the weather in Nghe An has had many complex developments with extreme phenomena such as severe cold, severe cold, heavy rain, tornadoes, lightning and hail. The impacts of the weather, combined with the terrain and geological characteristics of each locality, have also led to landslides, causing great impacts on people's lives and economy.

Specifically, in the first 5 months of the year, Nghe An experienced 2 severe cold spells; 4 heat waves; 2 widespread heavy rains; 1 storm and 3 flash floods and landslides. In addition, there were many tornadoes, local heavy rains and hailstorms, causing significant damage to agricultural and forestry production and infrastructure.

PV: SCompared to previous years, is there anything unusual about the weather, sir?

GrandfatherTang Van An: Dangerous weather phenomena from the beginning of the year until now have mostly occurred in accordance with climate laws. In particular, the flash floods and landslides that occurred in late May and early June were unusual. Because according to the average of many years, landslides in the mountainous areas of Nghe An province usually occur during the months of peak heavy rain in the mountainous areas (August-September), but this year, in late May and early June, there were 3 flash floods and landslides in Que Phong and Tuong Duong.

These are unusual and worrying. Authorities, sectors and people need to closely monitor weather forecasts to proactively take timely response measures.

PV: What is the weather forecast for the rest of the year? Which areas and localities in the province should we pay attention to and what urgent measures should we prepare to cope with unusual climate changes?

GrandfatherTang Van An: The ENSO phenomenon is expected to remain neutral until the end of the year, so storms and tropical depressions affecting the mainland of Nghe An province will be at a level approximately equal to the average of many years and concentrated in September and October.

ENSO is an important, cyclical climate phenomenon that greatly affects the global climate. It consists of two opposing phases, El Nino and La Nina, and the transition between these two phases can cause major changes in weather and climate. El Nino is a phenomenon of abnormally warm sea surface temperatures in the central and eastern Pacific Ocean, usually lasting 8 to 12 months or longer. ENSO can have major impacts on climate, temperature and rainfall around the world, especially in regions such as Asia, Africa and North America.

The heat wave is forecast to last from now until around August, gradually decreasing from September. The intensity of the heat wave is equivalent to the average of many years in the same period and less severe than the same period in 2024. Heavy rains over a large area tend to increase, peaking from August to October. This is accompanied by thunderstorms, tornadoes, lightning, hail, strong gusts of wind, flash floods, and landslides. Regarding the temperature, monitoring shows that the average temperature and total rainfall in the past period are at a level equivalent to the average of many years.

Nghe An is a province with many localities that are easily affected by unusual climate changes, such as coastal areas due to the impact of storms and floods; and mountainous areas due to the impact of flash floods, landslides, etc. Of these, the most notable are the highland districts such as Ky Son, Que Phong, Tuong Duong, Quy Hop, Quy Chau, etc.

Mr. Tang Van An:The early forecasting work of Nghe An Province Hydrometeorological Station is always deployed, invested, cared for and carried out methodically. In particular, we have applied modern technology from advanced countries such as remote sensing technology and high-resolution dynamic models in forecasting storms, heavy rains, floods, flash flood warnings, etc.

The unit has also been investing in an automatic monitoring network, regularly maintaining and servicing to maintain good operation, ensuring rain and flood monitoring for timely forecasting and warning. Allocating human resources throughout the network is fully ready for monitoring, transmitting information and forecasting.

Besides, we closely coordinate with departments, branches, and provincial command boards for natural disaster prevention, search and rescue to promptly provide warning and forecast information.
