Six green policy groups as growth levers for Ho Chi Minh City to 2050

Ho Chi Minh City is promoting a green growth strategy, with the goal of achieving 10% growth by 2025 and sustainable development, through projects such as the renovation of the Nhieu Loc - Thi Nghe canal and the establishment of a Green Transformation Working Group.

Ho Chi Minh City continues to affirm its commitment to developing a green economy to achieve the growth target of 10% in 2025 and the following years. The Nhieu Loc - Thi Nghe Canal, once a polluted canal, has now been revived, a living proof of the city's greening efforts.

Green Transition Task Force

Recently, the Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee established a Green Transformation Advisory Working Group, with the task of proposing a strategy and roadmap to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050. The group will develop a green economic plan and solutions, a merger project with Binh Duong and Ba Ria - Vung Tau by 2030, organize workshops, international cooperation, and report on progress.

The city aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 10% by 2030 and net zero by 2050. Projects such as Can Gio's green transformation and the switch to electric vehicles are being accelerated. Dr. Truong Minh Huy Vu, Director of HIDS, emphasized that "green" and "digital" are the focus, taking advantage of renewable potential, electric vehicles, and policies from Resolution 98/2023/QH15, including rooftop solar and clean energy.

Ho Chi Minh City aims to play the role of a regional center in Southeast Asia with the following decisions:

Decision 1055/QD-UBND (2021): Reducing environmental pollution 2020-2030.

Decision 4589/QD-UBND (2022): Implementing the Green Growth Strategy 2021-2030, focusing on green economic structure and sustainable employment.

From July 1, 2025, Ho Chi Minh City will merge with Binh Duong and Ba Ria - Vung Tau, reaching an economic scale of VND 2.7 million billion (1/4 of the national GDP) and budget revenue of VND 682,000 billion (1/3 of the country). Experts recommend converting industry to high technology and green industry for sustainable development.
