Coffee prices have skyrocketed after the US imposed reciprocal tariffs, puzzling because by common logic, Arabica prices should have fallen as competition from Brazilian coffee weakened.

This price movement reflects the strong influence of speculators, especially when the market expects the US Federal Reserve to cut interest rates in September. This makes capital cheaper, creating an effective boost for the commodity market, including coffee.

This is a good time for inventory holders to sell ahead of the upcoming harvest season, as the prospect of a bumper crop often does not coincide with a hot price trend in the market.

The sharp rise in coffee prices presents a good opportunity for those with existing stocks, as existing crop can be sold at high prices before new supplies arrive.

On the London Stock Exchange, the online price of Robusta coffee futures for September 2025 delivery closed the trading session on August 8 at 3,561 USD/ton, up sharply by 1.18% (143 USD/ton) compared to the previous trading session. However, the November 2025 futures contract increased by 3.94% (133 USD/ton), reaching 3,510 USD/ton.

On the New York Stock Exchange, the price of Arabica coffee for September 2025 delivery increased sharply by 3.88% (11.55 US cents/pound) to 309.35 US cents/pound. The contract for December 2025 delivery increased by 3.88% (11.3 US cents/pound) to 302.45 US cents/pound.

Arabica coffee futures on ICE rose to a three-week high and are on track for a 7% gain this week, as trade between the United States and Brazil remains largely frozen after the Trump administration imposed a 50% tariff on Brazilian goods, and as stock markets tumbled.

Traders say there have been virtually no new orders between the U.S. and Brazil since the tariffs were imposed. Coffee shipments that were loaded in Brazil before Aug. 6 can still enter the U.S. duty-free if they arrive before Oct. 6.

Tight supplies are also helping to keep prices high. Brazil’s unroasted coffee exports fell 20.4% in July from a year earlier to 161,000 tonnes, according to data from the country’s Trade Ministry. Meanwhile, ICE-managed arabica inventories fell to a 14.5-month low of 738,095 bags as of Aug. 8.

In addition, the Brazilian Real rose to a one-month high, also supporting coffee prices, as the strong local currency reduces the incentive for Brazilian producers to sell on the international market.
