18-year-old girl mortgaged family property, transferred nearly 500 million to bad guys
An 18-year-old girl was "kidnapped online" by scammers who pawned her family's assets to deposit money into an account designated by them. The victim transferred 466 million VND into the scammer's account.
On August 19, Can Tho City Police said that Tan An Ward Police had justrescue the girl who was scammed, “online kidnapping”.
Accordingly, on the afternoon of August 18, Tan An Ward Police received a report from Mr. NHM that his daughter, ML (18 years old), had signs of being threatened, scammed, asked to transfer money and forced to isolate herself from her family by subjects impersonating police officers.
Upon receiving the report, Tan An Ward Police coordinated with professional units of Can Tho City Police and Cai Khe Ward Police to deploy verification measures.

At around 10pm the same day, the police discovered L. in a motel in Cai Khe ward and rescued him - 6 hours after receiving the report.
According to the initial investigation, on the same morning, L. continuously received calls from subjects claiming to be police officers, threatening the 18-year-old girl regarding illegal acts, forcing her to download a mobile application, make video calls, and then asking her to mortgage her family's assets to deposit money into an account designated by them.
Through that, L. transferred 466 million VND into the subject's account.
In particular, although in recent times, the police force and other authorities have continuously informed and widely warned about the scam of impersonating the police, there are still many cases of lack of vigilance, allowing bad guys to take advantage.
Can Tho City Police recommend that families, especially parents, relatives and teachers, need to pay attention, educate and guide their children on how to identify online scams; absolutely do not believe in baseless threats.
When encountering unusual situations, students must boldly share with their parents and teachers immediately to receive timely support; avoid falling into panic and following the requests of bad guys, leading to serious damage to property and spirit.
