Using your phone while it's charging: Is it really dangerous or just a misunderstanding?
Many people have a habit of using their phones while they're charging, but is this common practice potentially dangerous or just a misunderstanding?
Maintaining a healthy phone battery is crucial for extending its lifespan, but how much "care" is really necessary? For years, countless pieces of advice and rumors have circulated regarding battery optimization, the most common being avoiding using your phone while it's charging. In reality, this notion is only partially true, and in most situations, the concern is unfounded.
The charging process is more complex than users might imagine. Modern smartphones are designed to communicate with the charger, automatically adjusting the amount of power received to ensure optimal charging speed without causing damage. This sophistication makes using the phone while charging much safer than commonly feared.

At its core, this notion is based on two assumptions: that using the phone while charging can cause the battery to overheat or reduce its lifespan in the long run. However, in reality, most smartphones today are built to withstand this type of use. The important thing is to understand the true nature of the issue, so you can feel more confident when charging and using your device.
You can absolutely use your phone while it's charging.
In most cases, using your phone while charging is perfectly safe. The main concern stems from the fear of battery overheating: charging itself generates heat, and using the phone also produces heat. While high temperatures can damage the battery, modern smartphones are designed to handle this. In fact, when using your phone while charging, the system automatically slows down the charging speed, partly because you are consuming energy, and partly because the device prioritizes battery protection.
With wireless charging, you might notice your device gets warmer. This is because the technology is less efficient than wired charging, as energy has to pass through the back panel and even the protective case, leading to energy loss and heat generation. However, this is not significantly dangerous. Only when the device becomes uncomfortably hot should you temporarily stop charging to allow it to cool down.
In reality, for using a phone while charging to become a "risk," you would need several unfavorable factors to occur simultaneously, such as an old phone with a degraded battery, wirelessly charging in the scorching summer sun, and running a graphically intensive game. In other words, it's a rare scenario that most users would never encounter.
Does using your phone while it's charging reduce battery life?
A more common concern is that using the phone while charging can shorten battery life. In principle, lithium-ion batteries can only withstand a certain number of charging cycles in their lifespan. When subjected to excessive stress, this number of cycles can decrease, causing the battery to degrade quickly, making it difficult to fully charge or resulting in abnormal battery drain.
However, in reality, this impact is very small and rarely causes significant harm. Modern smartphones all incorporate advanced battery management technology, which helps control current and temperature, ensuring that battery cells operate within safe limits.
Only under extreme conditions, such as charging while playing demanding games in a hot environment, does the battery experience more stress than usual. Even then, the problem only becomes concerning if the device overheats to the point of being difficult to hold, displays system warnings, or suddenly shuts down.
In other words, battery life is less affected by the habit of using the device while charging, and depends more on the quality of the charger, charging cable, and how you maintain the device during daily use.
