The United Nations Secretary General and leaders of many countries will come to Hanoi to attend the signing ceremony of the Convention against Cybercrime.

Spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Pham Thu Hang said this afternoon that the signing ceremony of the United Nations Convention against Cybercrime with the theme "Fighting Cybercrime - Sharing Responsibility - Looking Towards the Future" will be held from October 25-26 in Hanoi.

President Luong Cuong will preside over the signing ceremony of the Convention with the participation of United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres and many senior leaders of countries, regional and international organizations.

It is expected that within the framework of the opening ceremony for signing the Convention, there will be a high-level plenary discussion, high-level roundtable discussions and sideline conferences on international cooperation in combating cybercrime.

This is the first time a Vietnamese place name has been associated with a global multilateral treaty related to a field of great interest to the international community, marking an important milestone in the history of Vietnam's multilateral diplomacy and Vietnam - United Nations relations.

The Hanoi Convention, consisting of 9 chapters and 71 articles, is the result of nearly 5 years of continuous and prolonged negotiations among member countries, aiming to build a comprehensive multilateral legal framework to combat cybercrime.

On September 22, at the United Nations headquarters in New York (USA), within the framework of the High-Level Week of the 80th United Nations General Assembly, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Public Security of Vietnam coordinated with the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) to co-organize the event "The Road to Hanoi: Opening Ceremony of the United Nations Convention against Cybercrime - Honoring multilateralism for a safe digital future".

Acting Foreign Minister Le Hoai Trung emphasized that international cooperation is essential in preventing and combating cybercrime and will be implemented more effectively in the coming time with the birth of the Convention - the first global legal framework to deal with this issue.

Acting Minister Le Hoai Trung emphasized that in its role as the host country for the signing ceremony of the Convention, Vietnam hopes the event will become a new milestone in strengthening multilateralism in general and global cooperation against cyber security threats in particular.

Ms. Ghada Waly, Under-Secretary-General of the United Nations, Director-General of the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) said that the Convention is a launching pad to fight cybercrime.

She stressed that the Convention is the first UN legal instrument on criminal justice in more than 20 years, designed to address various forms of cybercrime now and in the future. She expressed her appreciation for Vietnam’s efforts in preparing for the signing ceremony and pledged to continue to accompany and support countries towards the ratification and effective implementation of the Convention.
