Harvest time is a very important factor that directly determines the quality of black pepper. Therefore, growers need to pay special attention to this stage to avoid losing the results of a whole season of care.

From flowering to fruiting, black pepper plants need about 8 to 10 months to fully mature. This period may vary slightly depending on weather conditions each year. In the main pepper growing regions such as the Central Highlands and the Southeast, the harvest season usually falls in February or March, coinciding with the cashew harvest.

Harvesting techniques also require meticulousness. Farmers usually pick pepper by hand and divide it into two or three batches in a season. The whole bunch should only be picked when ripe or old fruits appear on the bunch. Picking green bunches, except for the last batch of the season, will cause the pepper to be flat and reduce the quality.

To prepare for harvest, the first job is to clear the surrounding grass for easy movement. People often spread tarps under the pepper poles to catch the seeds, both to collect quickly and to avoid loss. Because pepper is often grown on tall poles or climbing cashew trees, farmers have to use ladders to climb up and pick each bunch.

Pepper price today September 28 in the world market

In the world market, based on quotes from exporting enterprises and export prices in various countries, the International Pepper Association (IPC) has updated the prices of all types of pepper traded in the international market as of September 27 (local time) as follows:

Indonesia’s Lampung black pepper prices remained unchanged from yesterday at $6,945 per tonne. Meanwhile, Muntok white pepper prices remained unchanged from yesterday at $9,841 per tonne.

Brazilian ASTA black pepper prices remained unchanged from yesterday at $6,500/mt.

Malaysia’s ASTA black pepper price remained unchanged from yesterday at $9,600/ton. Meanwhile, the country’s ASTA white pepper price also remained unchanged from yesterday at $13,000/ton.

Prices of all types of Vietnamese pepper remained unchanged compared to yesterday. Of which, the price of Vietnamese black pepper 500 gr/l reached 6,600 USD/ton; 550 gr/l reached 6,800 USD/ton.

In addition, Vietnam's white pepper price remained unchanged from yesterday at 9,250 USD/ton.

According to the International Pepper Community, this week's pepper prices did not record any price increase from any major producing country. The strength of the US dollar is currently the main reason for the market's sluggishness.

The impact of the strong US dollar is evident in the fact that domestic and export prices of Indian pepper have fallen continuously for 3 weeks. The reason is that the Indian Rupee has lost about 1% against the USD. The strength of the USD is reinforced by positive US economic data, making it more difficult for the Fed to decide to cut interest rates.

In the short term, the Import-Export Department believes that the market is still favorable for growers and businesses. This comes from the purchasing interest of international customers and the supply from some producing countries is still limited.

Looking towards the end of 2025 and the beginning of 2026, many optimistic forecasts suggest that pepper prices will remain high. The general trend is expected to continue to increase slightly in the coming time.
