Brave medical staff stopped a knife-wielding attacker at Nghe An Maternity and Pediatrics Hospital
At 10:00 a.m. on October 23, a very serious incident occurred at Nghe An Maternity and Pediatrics Hospital. Accordingly, a subject attacked and murdered a patient’s family and medical staff.
The suspect who attacked and killed the medical staff was Ban Van Vy (born in 1996), from Bac Ninh, currently residing in Que Phong commune, Nghe An province.
Vy and his wife already have a 3-year-old child. During this second birth, Vy's wife was admitted to Nghe An Maternity and Pediatrics Hospital to give birth to premature twins.
Vy's wife and two children are being cared for and treated in room 304, Neonatal Department, Nghe An Obstetrics and Pediatrics Hospital. While his wife and children are in the hospital, Vy and his relatives are always present to take care of them. Normally, Vy does not show any unusual signs...
On October 22, one of Vy's two babies showed signs of infection and was transferred to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit for treatment.
At 10:00 a.m. on October 23, Vy entered room 305 of the Neonatal Department and suddenly used a knife to attack a patient's family member and a medical staff member who was taking care of the child in the room. Then, Vy grabbed a newborn baby in the same room and threw him out the window with the intention of throwing him down.
Ms. Tran Thi Hong - another nurse of the Department had promptly entered to take back the baby. At this time, Ms. Hong was immediately attacked by Vy with a knife. Not only did he attack the medical staff and 2 relatives of the patient in room 304, Vy also used a knife to attack his wife but luckily she avoided it.
In order to stop Vy and protect the safety of the patient and her family, nurse Nguyen Thuy Trang also intervened. Vy continued to attack Trang. When Trang tried to escape and run back to the nursing room - Neonatal Department, Vy continued to chase after her.
At the nursing room, the subject used a knife to attack medical staff Nguyen Thi Thu Hoai. To protect herself, Ms. Trang used a thin blanket to cover herself and asked the subject to stop. But Vy did not stop and continued to attack with a knife.
At 10:05 a.m., security forces arrived, persuaded the subject to stop, created conditions for Ms. Trang to escape, and locked the nursing room; waiting for the police force to come and control and arrest the subject.
This knife attack and murder injured 4 medical staff members Tran Thi Hong, Nguyen Thuy Trang, Nguyen Thi Thu Hoai and Nguyen Thi Nhung along with 2 family members and 1 newborn baby. Nurse Thuy Trang was the most seriously injured with 4 deep stab wounds to the neck and chest. 3 other nurses were injured in the abdomen and eyes. 2 family members of the patient were slightly injured, 1 newborn baby had head injuries.
When the incident occurred, Nghe An Obstetrics and Pediatrics Hospital provided first aid and took medical staff and the patient's family to Nghe An General Friendship Hospital for emergency treatment. There, the medical staff underwent emergency surgery.
Upon receiving information about the incident, Director of the Department of Health Le Thi Hoai Chung and Deputy Director of the Department of Health Tran Minh Tue were present at Nghe An General Hospital to direct the rescue work. Deputy Director of the Department of Health Nguyen Huu Le was present at Nghe An Obstetrics and Pediatrics Hospital to share, encourage, and grasp the incident; and direct the stabilization of the situation at the hospital to ensure good medical examination and treatment for the people.
It is known that the medical staff successfully performed emergency surgery and passed the critical stage.
