The Norwegian striker has scored 27 goals for club and national team with six months remaining in the season, averaging nearly two goals per 90 minutes. This explosive form has led manager Pep Guardiola to compare him to Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo, although Haaland humbly declines to do so. In the Premier League, Haaland's 13 goals account for 65% of Manchester City's total; without those goals, City would be seven points behind. This is a defining test for Virgil van Dijk and the very structure of Liverpool's defense.

Liverpool have good reasons to believe in their plan. Haaland has only scored three goals in eight encounters against The Kop in his career, and just one in four Premier League matches. A clean sheet against Haaland at the Etihad would be the strongest response.

Jamie Carragher once called Haaland the biggest threat to Arsenal's title hopes. At the Etihad, that threat is also the biggest test of Liverpool's ambitions.
