Haaland challenges Van Dijk: Liverpool visit Etihad.

Liverpool visit the Etihad Stadium to face Haaland, who is scoring nearly 2 goals per 90 minutes; 13 Premier League goals account for 65% of Man City's total. Aston Villa have previously neutralized him; Van Dijk wins 77.2% of his duels.

This weekend at the Etihad Stadium presents Liverpool with a simple yet harsh question: can they neutralize the in-form Erling Haaland? The Norwegian striker has scored 27 goals for club and national team with six months remaining in the season, averaging nearly two goals per 90 minutes. This explosive form has led manager Pep Guardiola to compare him to Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo, although Haaland humbly declines to do so. In the Premier League, Haaland's 13 goals account for 65% of Manchester City's total; without those goals, City would be seven points behind. This is a defining test for Virgil van Dijk and the very structure of Liverpool's defense.

Can Van Dijk neutralize Haaland?

Liverpool have previously contained Haaland in direct confrontations.

Liverpool have good reasons to believe in their plan. Haaland has only scored three goals in eight encounters against The Kop in his career, and just one in four Premier League matches. He was absent from their most recent meeting in February; before that, the striker had only managed a combined three shots in two consecutive games. The last time Haaland scored against Liverpool was back in November 2023. Of all the opponents, only Aston Villa (one of the two teams that prevented him from scoring this season along with Spurs) and Newcastle have been more effective in limiting Haaland.

In one-on-one duels, Van Dijk usually takes the initiative. The one-on-one situation at Anfield last March is a prime example: the Dutch center-back maintained his composure, acting as a shield between Haaland and Alisson, forcing the striker out of his ideal shooting range.

Unai Emery's Aston Villa: A tactical benchmark.

The difference is that Haaland is now even more difficult to deal with: Man City are less obsessed with ball control, instead optimizing opportunities for the number 9 to exploit the space behind them, just as he tormented Bournemouth. He also participates more in the overall play, and increases his number of touches in the penalty area.

Nevertheless, Aston Villa presented a viable model. Unai Emery emphasized the role of Emiliano Martinez, the quality of one-on-one duels, the tight defensive line, and the defensive cover. According to GeniusIQ data, in Villa's 1-0 win, Haaland received the ball in an average of only 2.8 square meters of space – significantly less than the 4.0 square meters in City's other matches. Ezri Konsa's tight marking reduced Haaland's touches (especially in the penalty area) below his usual level; at the same time, the striker received only 10 passes – his lowest in the Premier League this season.

Van Dijk and the problem of cutting off the supply of balls.

“Everyone outside wants to focus on the one-on-one battle, but it’s all about acting together and cutting off the supply of the ball,” Van Dijk said after Liverpool’s 1-0 win over Man City in October 2022. That message remains just as relevant as the passing machine for Haaland is shifting: previously it was Kevin de Bruyne, but since the Belgian left in June, new avenues have opened up. This Premier League season, the player who has passed Haaland the most is Phil Foden (16 times). Liverpool also need to be wary of Rayan Cherki, who assisted both of Haaland’s goals against Bournemouth.

If there's one individual capable of anchoring the system – holding the line in duels, commanding space, and blocking attacking passes – it's Van Dijk. Despite being publicly questioned by Wayne Rooney about his leadership qualities, the 34-year-old is proving himself with data: a 77.2% win rate in duels, higher than any previous season at Liverpool. A clean sheet against Haaland at the Etihad would be the strongest response.

Jamie Carragher once called Haaland the biggest threat to Arsenal's title hopes. At the Etihad, that threat is also the biggest test of Liverpool's ambitions. If they can replicate the "Aston Villa style"—suffocating space, winning duels, and cutting off passes from Foden and Cherki—Liverpool have a chance to neutralize City's number one striker. Otherwise, Haaland's statistics speak for themselves.
