After saying goodbye to Shin Tae-yong and Patrick Kluivert, the naturalized group like Jay Idzes and Calvin Verdonk still keep their commitment, according to Ronny Pangemanan; PSSI aims for the 2027 Asian Cup.

Despite two major changes in the head coach position, the group of naturalized players of the Indonesian team is still considered to be committed and ready to accompany for a long time. This view is emphasized by experts, in the context of PSSI looking for a new coach after the short period of Patrick Kluivert.

Indonesia has undergone many personnel changes.

Confidence remains unchanged after two coaching changes

According to Bola.com, the turmoil began when PSSI parted ways with Shin Tae-yong. Patrick Kluivert was appointed but did not stay long after failing to lead Indonesia through the 2026 World Cup qualifiers. While the identity of the next head coach remains unclear, the big question revolves around the level of commitment of the group of naturalized players.

Expert perspective: Unwavering commitment

Expert Ronny Pangemanan believes that players like Jay Idzes and his teammates remain committed to the team, regardless of who the coach is.

“As long as Mr. Erick is still the President of PSSI, I believe that the naturalized players will still be with the Indonesian team. They have to accept whoever the coach is, because that is the responsibility of a professional player,” Bung Ropan – nickname of Ronny Pangemanan – shared on YouTube Nusantara TV.

He added: “Especially when PSSI is looking for a good coach, of higher quality than Patrick Kluivert. Surely the players will be interested, because they have acquired Indonesian citizenship, have played for the national team, and cannot wear the shirt of another team.”

Force structure: long-term pillars and the age problem

Bung Ropan believes that most naturalized players are intended to be mainstays for many years. However, the age of some players makes the plan need to be carefully considered.

  • Ready to give group: Jay Idzes, Emil Audero, Calvin Verdonk, Kevin Diks.
  • Teams to watch due to age: Thom Haye, Joey Pelupessy, Marc Klok, Jordi Amat.
  • Potential successors: Ivar Jenner, Milano, Mauro.

This layering helps Indonesia maintain a stable framework, while paving the way for the next generation to step into a larger role when appropriate.

From emotion to responsibility of wearing Garuda's mantle

The basis for the experts’ belief lies in the way the naturalized team shows emotion and fighting spirit. “Verdonk once said he was very happy to wear the Indonesian shirt. Jay Idzes has fallen in love with this country,” said Bung Ropan.

The moments after the defeat to Iraq – when many players collapsed and cried – were seen as visual proof of the sense of responsibility for the red and white shirt. With Kesit Budi Handoyo, Jay Idzes is a typical example: “From the statements of the players, I believe that commitment is still very strong. Jay Idzes is playing well at Sassuolo, and in interviews, he always shows respect and pride in wearing the Indonesia shirt.”

Towards Asian Cup 2027

The immediate task for PSSI is to strengthen the confidence and stability of the naturalized group, along with the selection of a new head coach. With a framework expected to remain cohesive, the nearest milestone to measure progress is the 2027 Asian Cup.

With many naturalized players already established in the national team and unable to play for other teams, clarity from PSSI on professional direction will be key. Continuity in messaging and selection criteria will help Indonesia turn its existing resources into a stable competitive force moving forward.
