Details of 2 important projects soon to be inaugurated in Nghe An.

Ban Mong Reservoir - a national-scale irrigation project in western Nghe An province.

The Ban Mong Reservoir Project is a Group A irrigation project, built on the Hieu River, in the communes of Quy Chau, Chau Binh, and Tam Hop (Nghe An province) and a part of Thanh Hoa province. With a capacity of nearly 225 million m³ and a total investment of over 5,500 billion VND, it is the largest irrigation project in Nghe An province, identified as a key national irrigation project, and of particular importance to the socio-economic development of western Nghe An and surrounding areas.

The Ban Mong Reservoir was invested in with a multi-purpose objective: ensuring irrigation for approximately 18,858 hectares of agricultural land along the Hieu River; providing supplementary water to the Ca River during the dry season with a flow rate of about 22 m³/second; combining power generation with an installed capacity of 45 MW; and simultaneously creating a water source for domestic use, industry, livestock farming, aquaculture, environmental improvement, and flood reduction in the downstream area of ​​the Hieu River. The project is expected to create an important foundation for sustainable development in the western region of Nghe An province.

In terms of technical scale, the Ban Mong reservoir headworks complex is a Class I project, comprising a system of dams, spillways, and modern components such as gravity concrete dams, multi-block earth dams, large-scale regulating flood spillways, deep discharge culverts, water intake culverts, and a 45 MW hydropower plant with an expected annual electricity output of 168 million kWh.

A highlight of the project is the research and application of fly ash – a waste product of thermal power plants – into the concrete of the construction. With approximately 22,000 tons of fly ash used, this solution not only contributes to environmental protection but also reduces investment costs by about 85 billion VND and accelerates construction progress.

Despite the harsh climate conditions of the North Central region and the enormous construction volume, the Project Management Board and the construction units have made strenuous efforts to overcome difficulties and complete the headworks complex according to technical requirements. To date, the main components have been completed, ensuring the tasks of water storage for flood control, flow regulation, gravity irrigation, environmental discharge, and power generation. The inauguration of Phase 1 of the Ban Mong Reservoir Project is an important milestone, creating a foundation for the continued completion of the remaining components of the project in the future.

Upgrading Vinh International Airport - completing the transportation infrastructure at the province's gateway.

Alongside key national irrigation projects, the Vinh International Airport upgrade project is also of particular importance for the development of transportation infrastructure, regional connectivity, and the promotion of socio-economic development in Nghe An province. The project is invested by the Vietnam Airports Corporation - JSC (ACV), with a total capital of nearly 1,000 billion VND, comprising 3 component projects.

Specifically, the Vinh International Airport Domestic Terminal Renovation Project has a total investment of over VND 68.36 billion, classified as a Group C project and a Grade I transportation infrastructure project. The project aims to expand operating space, improve passenger service capacity, and standardize technical components. The renovation scope includes filling in 5 atrium openings with an area of ​​approximately 1,189 m², renovating the first floor, replacing the second floor, rebuilding the two staircases in front of the lobby, relocating the glass facade on the second floor, investing in a glass canopy for the stairwell, adding security screening equipment, and completing related technical systems.

The project commenced on July 2, 2025, with a construction period of 180 days. To date, all items have been completed 100%, the acceptance and completion documents have been finalized, and the project has been approved for fire safety.

The Vinh International Airport apron expansion and renovation project has a total investment of over VND 233.63 billion. It is a Group B project, a Class I transportation infrastructure project, funded by ACV's Development Investment Fund. The project aims to expand the apron, ensuring the operation of Code E aircraft and providing 9 parking positions for Code C aircraft, while also investing in a comprehensive drainage system, lighting, and protective fencing.

Construction began on May 8, 2025, with a planned construction period of 240 days. However, the project's progress was affected because the site was not fully handed over until October 9, 2025. To date, the foundation work is 100% complete. The project is divided into two phases for operation: Phase 1 will operate the first four parking spaces from December 19, 2025; Phase 2 will complete the entire parking area and is expected to be operational from February 1, 2026.

The third component project is the runway and taxiway repair project at Vinh International Airport, with a total investment of over VND 623.36 billion, classified as a Group B project and a Level I transportation infrastructure project. The project aims to address the damage and deterioration of the runway and taxiways, ensuring long-term safety and efficient operation of Vinh International Airport.

The investment scope includes repairing the 2,400m long runway, taxiways W1, W2, and the W3 ramp; repairing the road shoulders and safety strips, adding stopways, completing the drainage system, painting signal markings, and replacing the navigation lights and equipment. The project commenced on July 1, 2025, with a construction period of 150 days. To date, most construction and equipment installation items have been completed; ACV has reported the project completion and is coordinating with relevant authorities to carry out acceptance testing and obtain operational approval. The facility is scheduled to be put into operation from December 19, 2025.

The completion and commissioning of the Vinh International Airport upgrade projects will significantly contribute to improving operational capacity, ensuring flight safety, enhancing passenger service quality, and completing the air gateway transportation infrastructure of Nghe An province.

Along with the Ban Mong Reservoir, these two key projects are expected to create new momentum, boost socio-economic development, improve people's lives, and open up space for sustainable development for Nghe An in the coming period.
