The return of specialized hardware
A unique motherboard from ASRock, the BC-250, equipped with a custom APU (accelerated processing unit) from the PlayStation 5, is attracting attention from the tech community. YouTuber ETA Prime has demonstrated how to transform this hardware into a high-performance gaming machine, dubbed a "Steam Machine," for only about $100.
Power from a scaled-down PlayStation 5 APU
At the heart of the ASRock BC-250 is a scaled-down version of the PlayStation 5's APU. This means the chip retains the powerful Zen 2 CPU architecture and RDNA 2 GPU, but may have had its core count or clock speed reduced to suit its original purpose. Even so, its remaining power is still sufficient to deliver a smooth gaming experience at 1080p resolution, a common standard today.
The role of the Bazzite operating system
To unlock the full potential of this unique hardware, software selection is crucial. YouTuber ETA Prime installed Bazzite, a Linux-based operating system optimized for gaming, similar to Valve's SteamOS. Bazzite provides the necessary drivers and compatibility layers like Proton, allowing it to run many games originally developed for Windows.
The installation and tuning process required some technical knowledge, but the results showed that this board could be a very attractive alternative to low-cost gaming consoles. This is proof that reusing and customizing hardware can create innovative products with high economic efficiency.
