Barca targets 4 center-backs to rescue their dilapidated defense.
Faced with a severe personnel shortage due to injuries and personal issues of key players, Barcelona have identified four potential targets for the January transfer window.
Hansi Flick is facing his biggest challenge since taking over at Camp Nou. The Catalan giants' defense, which was the springboard for their impressive early season form, is now on the verge of collapse due to a wave of injuries and the departure of key players.
A serious personnel crisis in the defense.
According to Mundo Deportivo, Barcelona's injury list has suffered another major blow as Andreas Christensen has been diagnosed with an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury that will keep him out of action for approximately four months. Meanwhile, vice-captain Ronald Araujo is also unavailable due to personal issues.
This shortage is exacerbated by the fact that the team previously allowed Inigo Martinez to move to Al Nassr without a suitable replacement. Currently, Hansi Flick only has two pure first-team center-backs at his disposal: the young talent Pau Cubarsi and Eric Garcia. This forces the club's management to activate a plan to find reinforcements during the winter transfer window.
Recruitment strategy in the context of austerity measures.
Despite the urgent need for reinforcements, Barcelona must operate within tight financial constraints. The club plans to take advantage of a La Liga regulation that allows 80% of a player's long-term injury pay (as in Christensen's case) to register a new central defender.
Sporting Director Deco's selection criteria are clear: prioritize experienced players, those capable of immediate adaptation, or those whose contracts are about to expire to optimize costs.

Four targets are on Barcelona's radar.
Currently, the Camp Nou team has identified four potential candidates to strengthen their defense:
- Stefan de Vrij (Inter Milan):At 33 years old, the Dutch center-back possesses extensive match experience. Having only started 8 games this season and being in the final months of his contract makes him a top target.
- Juan Jesus (Napoli):Although he is still trusted by coach Antonio Conte, the fact that his contract expires next summer gives Barca hope of acquiring the 34-year-old player at a lower fee.
- Koni De Winter (AC Milan):A younger and more promising option is being closely monitored by Barca's scouting team.
- Luka Vuskovic (Hamburg):The young talent currently playing in Germany on loan from Tottenham is a surprising name on the shortlist.
Difficult contingency plans
Besides the four names mentioned above, Barca have also expressed interest in Marco Senesi of Bournemouth and Nathan Ake of Manchester City. However, the chances of these two deals succeeding are not high. Bournemouth are almost certainly unwilling to let go of their key player mid-season, while Nathan Ake has a very high salary and a contract that runs until 2027.
The addition of a central defender in January is not just a tactical move, but also a guarantee of Barcelona's title ambitions during the most crucial stage of the season.
