The U.S. Army has just completed a live-fire exercise in Washington with a variant of the Stryker armored vehicle equipped with a 30mm cannon and digital control system.

The U.S. Army has officially confirmed the successful testing of a new variant of the Stryker armored vehicle at the Yakima Training Center in Washington. The exercise, conducted by soldiers from the 1st Battalion, 2nd Stryker Combat Brigade, focused on evaluating the combat capabilities of the 30mm automatic cannon system in both daytime and nighttime conditions.

Upgrading firepower and modern combat capabilities.

The week-long exercise was conducted in a realistic operational environment, simulating complex attack and defense scenarios. A highlight of this Stryker variant is the integration of a 30mm automatic cannon mounted on the vehicle, replacing the lighter weapon systems found in older variants. According to Captain Jarid Prahl, Assistant Operations Officer of the 2nd Battalion, 3rd Infantry Regiment, U.S. Army, this is the second infantry unit to be trained with this powerful weapon system.

The upgrade to a 30mm caliber significantly enhances the Stryker armored vehicle's range and destructive power. The new system provides the crew with a flexible range of firepower options, from airburst rounds to high-explosive rounds, allowing for effective destruction of a wide variety of targets, from infantry to lightly armored enemy vehicles.

Integrates advanced digital control systems.

Beyond its firepower, the core element of the new Stryker variant lies in its network connectivity and digital control capabilities. The crew utilizes a Combat Network connection along with a Digital Range Training System. Sensors inside the vehicle monitor, record, and evaluate crew performance in real time.

This digital system allows for instantaneous data sharing between vehicles and firing range infrastructure. The vehicle commander and gunner can track targets via digital screens, adjusting firepower based on terrain feedback and enemy movement. This enhances situational awareness, a vital element in modern warfare.

Current effectiveness and future potential

Lieutenant Derrick Eng, the officer in charge of the firing range, noted that the new system requires close coordination among crew members due to the complexity of the supporting technology. However, the soldiers' rapid adaptation demonstrates the effectiveness of the new control interface and fire control software.

Private Nicolas Taylor shared that the system offers an unprecedented level of complexity and combat capability. Recording engagements allows teams to review data between training sessions instead of waiting until the end of the exercise, thereby learning from experience and adjusting firing techniques in a timely manner. With the dedication of the crews and the power of the new weapon, the Stryker 30mm is expected to significantly change the way US infantry brigades fight in the near future.
