The US-developed TEMPEST mobile air defense system has shot down at least 21 Shahed drones in Ukraine thanks to its rapid response capabilities and precision-guided missiles.
The Ukrainian Air Force's TEMPEST mobile air defense system has recorded the destruction of at least 21 Shahed attack drones. This is a modern weapon system specifically designed to counter low-flying, small-sized targets requiring extremely rapid response times on the battlefield.
Rapid response capability
According to a statement from the Operations Center of the Ukrainian Air Force Command, the successful interceptions were the result of continuous combat operations by mobile air defense units. The TEMPEST system allows the crew to complete the entire process from target detection to missile launch in just a few seconds. This speed is crucial in preventing suicide drones from penetrating cities behind the front lines.
The most outstanding feature of TEMPEST is its high mobility. The system is capable of rapidly deploying firepower and immediately changing positions after launch, helping to preserve forces against enemy counter-fire. Combat data shows that the unit's actual effectiveness can exceed the officially recorded figure of 21 targets.
Technical analysis and equipment
The TEMPEST system is a product of V2X (USA), first introduced at the AUSA 2025 defense exhibition in October 2025 in Washington. The system is optimized for missions requiring flexibility and the ability to operate in conditions of limited visibility.
The mobile version is built on the Can-Am Maverick X3 off-road chassis with the following specific technical specifications:
- Firepower:The launcher holds two AGM-114 Hellfire missiles, most likely the AGM-114L Hellfire Longbow variant equipped with a radar-guided seeker.
- Sensors:The radar station (RAL) and radio communication antennas are integrated directly onto the vehicle's roof for target identification.
- Versatility:In addition to the mobile version, the developer also offers a trailer-mounted variant for static defense missions at base stations or airfields.
The deployment of TEMPEST in Ukraine demonstrates a trend toward using short-range missile systems with reasonable operating costs and high mobility to counter the growing threat from inexpensive UAVs in modern warfare.
