How to build a Macintosh mini computer from an alarm clock and a Raspberry Pi.
Discover this DIY project that transforms a toy alarm clock into a legendary Apple Macintosh computer with a Raspberry Pi 2 processor and a 7.1 cm LCD screen.
The YouTube channel "This Does Not Compute" recently captured the attention of the tech community with a DIY project that transformed a digital alarm clock into a complete Macintosh computer. The project used the casing of a toy replica of the classic Macintosh 68000 PC to recreate the tech world of Apple's early years.

To complete the project, the development team removed all the internal components of the original alarm clock. Instead, they installed a Raspberry Pi 2 microprocessor connected to an LCD screen approximately 7.1 cm in size. Emulator software was installed on a removable microSD card, accurately mimicking early Apple operating systems.

Typical hardware and software configurations
The development team fine-tuned many configuration parameters to ensure the device had the look and feel of a true retro device. Notably, the touch functionality of the LCD screen was completely disabled. The reason given was to maintain historical authenticity, as Apple only began integrating touch technology with the launch of the iPhone in 2007.
Limitations of the Macintosh mini
Despite its high collectible and nostalgic value, the project still has some technical limitations:
- Disable physical keys:Hardware modifications have rendered the brightness and volume control buttons on the original watch non-functional.
- Display ratio:The size and aspect ratio of the LCD screen didn't quite match the original Macintosh screen.
- Limited applications:The device is primarily intended for experiencing older operating systems and does not support modern applications.
However, the project is considered a commendable effort in recreating Apple's history. It's an interesting way for tech enthusiasts to temporarily disconnect from the modern world and experience the slower pace of life from a previous decade.
