Despite possessing a multi-layered defense network ranging from S-300 to Bavar-373, Iran's radar systems and electronic warfare capabilities still reveal numerous strategic vulnerabilities.
Iran's air defense system is currently a complex combination of classic equipment and modern, domestically produced technology. Despite possessing a multi-layered network with thousands of launchers, recent combat experience shows that Tehran still struggles to counter coordinated attacks using stealth aircraft and advanced electronic warfare.

Long-range air defense systems: From the legacy S-200 to the Bavar-373
The backbone of Iran's strategic air defense is based on the Soviet-era S-200 system. Tehran has undertaken extensive domestication programs, developing the Fajr-8 and Ghareh missile series with a range of up to 350 km. In addition, the Sayyad missile series plays a central role in the defense strategy, notably:
- Sayyad-4:Used for the Bavar-373 system with a range of 300 km.
- Sayyad-4B:The latest version features a two-stage propulsion system and a claimed range of up to 400 km.
- Sayyad-2 and 3:The mid-range and long-range variants were developed based on Western and Chinese technology.
The Talash and Khordad-15 systems represent a step forward in mobility. While Talash incorporates the Ofogh radar to track targets at a range of 200 km, Khordad-15 is equipped with an advanced phased-array radar, enabling simultaneous engagement of multiple targets, including stealth aircraft and modern cruise missiles.
The role of S-300 and other medium-range missile systems.
In 2016, Iran received four S-300PMU-2 missile systems from Russia after years of delays. Equipped with 48N6E2 missiles, these systems provide protection for key targets such as nuclear facilities. However, with only four systems, they cannot create continuous coverage across Iran's vast territory.
In the medium-range segment, Iran maintains approximately 150 MIM-23 Hawk launchers or the domestically produced Mersad variant. The Raad-1, Raad-2, and Khordad-3 systems are also widely deployed to form a flexible defensive buffer. Short-range coverage is handled by the imported Tor-M1 system in conjunction with domestically produced systems such as Azarakhsh, Zubin, and Ya Zahra-3.
The real-world challenge from Operation Epic Fury
Despite its impressive technical specifications in theory, the actual effectiveness of Iran's air defense network is being seriously questioned following the events of February 28th. During Operation Epic Fury, foreign aircraft penetrated deep into Iranian airspace and attacked key targets.
According to reports from the Jerusalem Post, Iran's radar system showed signs of being paralyzed or "frozen" due to electronic warfare throughout the attack. Experts from Defense Express believe that Iran's true strength lies not in the number of launchers but in the survivability, integration, and redundancy of its radar network against modern air defense suppression.
