Many drivers have experienced the situation of being stuck in a large parking lot and unable to find their car. A simple trick that few people know about can help increase the signal range of a smart key.
In many crowded parking lots, finding your car can sometimes be difficult. There are numerous instances where users press the button on the remote key fob, but the car doesn't respond because the distance has exceeded the operating range. However, there's a little trick that many people share: hold the car key close to your head and then press the button.
This technique may sound strange, but in many cases it can help the vehicle receive signals from a greater distance than usual.

The procedure is quite simple: while standing a distance from the car, hold the remote key close to your head, then press the unlock or find car button. If the signal is strong, the car may respond by opening the doors or turning on the turn signals.
This tip is especially useful when you want to unlock your car remotely, or locate your car in a large parking lot, or when the key is outside the operating range.
However, this method isn't always effective. If the distance between the user and the vehicle is too great, the signal may still not reach the vehicle. In that case, you need to move closer or try changing your position.
Why does placing the keys on your head work?
At first glance, many might think this is just a coincidence. However, several studies and experiments suggest that this phenomenon has a scientific basis.
According to experts, the human head can act as a "temporary antenna" to amplify the signal from a remote key fob. This is because the amount of fluid in the body, especially in the brain, is electrically conductive and helps to propagate radio waves more effectively.
This phenomenon has been mentioned in the popular automotive television show Top Gear, as well as in The New York Times. In addition, several research groups and science channels have conducted experiments to verify this trick.
The experiment showed that the signal could be stronger.
A test conducted by the American technology company Altair measured the operating range of the remote keyless entry (RKE) signal in three different scenarios.
The testing steps include:
- Measure the signal range when no one is present.
The tester held the key with their arm extended.
- Place the key against the test subject's head.
The results showed that the third case yielded the longest signal range, suggesting that the human head may help enhance the key's broadcasting capability.

In a simple experiment on the Top Gear show, presenter Jeremy Clarkson tested the range of a car key.
Initially, the car responded at a distance of about 36 meters. When the tester moved further away, about 9-14 meters, the key stopped working.
Next, the key is placed on top and the unlock button is pressed. As a result, the car responds by turning on the turn signals, indicating that the signal range has been extended.
This experiment was later replicated by science channels such as Sixty Symbols. In another experiment, British physics professor Roger Bowley even placed a large bottle of water on his head to increase the amount of liquid, making the signal even stronger.
Using your head as an "antenna" isn't a perfect solution, but it might be worth a try when you need to find your car in a large parking lot.
If that doesn't work, try another trick: turning your head in different directions. Experiments have shown that the human head doesn't amplify signals equally in all directions, so facing the car might help the signal transmit better.
In many cases, just a small change in direction or position is enough to get the car to receive the signal and respond with lights or unlocking. This is a simple trick, but it can be useful for any driver when trying to find their car in a large parking lot.
