Russia receives new batch of Pantsir-S systems: Countering swarms of drones and cruise missiles.
Rostec Corporation has just completed the delivery of a batch of Pantsir-S air defense systems to the Russian military, and also introduced the SMD variant capable of carrying 48 missiles to destroy drones.
The High Precision Systems Corporation (part of Rostec) has just completed the delivery of a new batch of Pantsir-S anti-aircraft missile and artillery systems to the Russian Ministry of Defense. These systems have passed a series of rigorous tests and have been accepted for deployment in the defense of the skies.
Notably, Rostec claims that Pantsir is now capable of countering most modern air-to-air weapons. This includes the Flamingo – a new long-range cruise missile being developed by Ukraine with technical assistance from the West.
Breakthrough in countermeasures against drone swarms.
To address the challenge posed by large-scale drone fleets, the Russian defense industry has launched a specialized variant, the Pantsir-SMD. This variant completed its development in June 2025 with significant optimizations in firepower.
The core difference of the Pantsir-SMD is the integration of lightweight, short-range surface-to-air missiles. This improvement not only reduces production costs but also quadruples the number of missiles carried. Specifically, each Pantsir-SMD launcher can carry up to 48 missiles, a significant increase from the 12 missiles of the original Pantsir-S version.
This change aims to address the economic challenges in modern air defense: avoiding the waste of expensive guided missiles to shoot down inexpensive drone targets, while also preventing the risk of the system being overwhelmed by a large number of targets simultaneously.
Post-Soviet era air defense legacy
Unlike many Russian air defense systems, which are often upgraded versions from the Soviet era, Pantsir is a completely new design that entered service in 2012. The system flexibly combines 57E6M surface-to-air missiles and twin 30mm 2A38M automatic anti-aircraft guns.
Thanks to its high mobility, Pantsir has proven effective in the battlefields of Syria, Libya, and Ukraine. As of the early 2020s, the system had recorded the shooting down of more than 100 drones and at least one fighter jet. In particular, its ability to intercept stealth cruise missiles such as the Storm Shadow has been significantly improved based on real-world experience.
Continuous improvement based on real-world feedback.
Besides the SMD variant, the Pantsir-SM version, operational since 2019, also represents a significant advancement, expanding the operational range from 20km to 30km and increasing interception speed by 31%. Sergey Chemezov, CEO of Rostec, stated that the corporation maintains repair workshops near the front lines to receive direct feedback from soldiers and to promptly upgrade the hardware.
Furthermore, Russia is planning to strengthen its anti-drone defense network by integrating additional laser weapon systems. It is highly likely that a new type of laser weapon is being developed with technological support for direct integration onto the Pantsir chassis in the near future, creating a more effective multi-layered defense system.
