Factors affecting coffee prices

Downward price pressure on the world market stems from a combination of factors. According to Reuters and Barchart, expectations of a bumper crop in Brazil this year have limited room for price increases. Brokerage firm ADMIS assesses that the harvest, taking place in May–June, will be the decisive factor in determining future coffee price trends.

On the supply side, robusta harvesting progress in Brazil is beginning to add more supply to the market. Indonesia is also entering its robusta harvest season, contributing to an increase in global supply. Furthermore, expectations of a bumper arabica crop in Brazil are reinforcing the downward trend.

Risk aversion in international markets due to geopolitical tensions in the Middle East has led investors to reduce their holdings, putting further pressure on coffee prices. A slight rise in the US dollar during the session also affected the exchange rate, although not enough to sustain the price.

Brazilian inventory and market trends

Robusta coffee inventories on the ICE exchange fell to their lowest level in 1.25 years, at 3,982 lots as of April 9th. Conversely, arabica inventories rose to their highest level in 6.25 months, reaching 585,621 bags on March 18th.

In the Brazilian physical market, according to a report by the consulting firm Safras & Mercado, domestic arabica prices have fallen by as much as 90 real per bag. This development has led Brazilian farmers to hoard their stocks, waiting for better prices. As for robusta, despite the pressure, a portion of the new harvest is still being sold due to concerns that prices may continue to fall.

The strengthening of the Brazilian real — reaching a 23-month high against the USD on April 9 — has somewhat limited the price decline, as a stronger domestic currency reduces the export incentive for Brazilian coffee producers.

Analyzing coffee price trends

Today's coffee prices show a clear divergence between the domestic and global markets. In Vietnam, prices rose due to limited domestic supply as farmers restricted sales, combined with increased operating costs for irrigation pumps caused by high temperatures and rising fuel prices.

On the international market, a combination of increased supply, new harvests in Brazil and Indonesia, and risk-averse sentiment continues to put pressure on prices. The slight increase in July arabica futures suggests a technical correction, but robusta remains vulnerable due to more abundant global supply.

Coffee prices today, April 10, 2026, saw a slight decrease in the Central Highlands provinces, averaging 85,500 VND/kg. The main reasons are increased global supply and cautious market sentiment. However, prices are still supported by low inventory and exchange rate factors, so a sharp downward trend has not yet appeared.
