The loyal sons of Luong Son Red Village
April 25, 2026, marks the 95th anniversary of Luong Son Village's founding, an occasion to recall and express gratitude for the indomitable fighting spirit of the people during the Nghe Tinh Soviet Uprising. Prominent among these heroic chapters of history is the glorious sacrifice of Comrade Bui The Thuan and the Red Self-Defense fighters – those who fell for the noble revolutionary ideal.
Just over a month after the founding of the Indochinese Communist Party, on the night of March 14th and the early morning of March 15th, 1930, a Party cell was established in Luong Son village (Dang Son commune, Dang Son district, Anh Son prefecture), marking a crucial turning point in the local revolutionary movement. The cell, named "D" and with the pseudonym "Bach Linh," initially had only three members, two of whom were natives of Luong Son.

Prior to that, starting in September 1929, when the Indochinese Communist Party branch in Anh Son district was established in Duong Xuan village (now part of Yen Xuan commune), the revolutionary movement quickly spread. Luong Son soon became one of the areas with a revolutionary base, creating the foundation for the later establishment and development of the branch.
In May 1930, due to the growing strength of the organization, the Party cell was reorganized, and Comrade Bui The Thuan - one of the three original party members - was appointed secretary. By the end of August 1930, to meet the development needs of the movement, the "D" Party cell was split into three branches: Bach Linh, Bach Thuoc, and Bach Truat. Of these, the Bach Thuoc branch, with Comrade Bui The Thuan as secretary, was directly responsible for the Luong Son area and many neighboring villages.

From here, the revolutionary movement developed strongly. Mass organizations such as the Red Peasant Association, the Red Self-Defense Force, and the Mutual Aid Wards were established and consolidated. As early as the 1920s, Comrade Bui The Thuan, along with comrades such as Bui Van Thua and Le Van Kinh, organized production guilds, built revolutionary bases, and simultaneously opened classes to teach the national language to raise the intellectual level and enlighten the masses.
Under the guise of teaching, Comrade Bui The Thuan traveled extensively to spread revolutionary ideas, introducing the work "The Revolutionary Path" and the Party's guidelines, making a significant contribution to building revolutionary forces. Luong Son gradually became a key area where cadres of all levels operated and directed the movement; it was also a place for printing and distributing revolutionary documents. Therefore, the French colonialists and their puppet regime constantly monitored and severely suppressed it.
In response to the need to protect the movement, the Bach Thuoc Party Branch focused on building a Red Self-Defense Force. Under the leadership of Comrade Bui The Thuan, this force was organized and trained systematically, becoming a solid support for the masses in the struggles.

During the Nghệ Tĩnh Soviet Uprising of 1930-1931, under the leadership of the Party, the people of Đặng Sơn (a large commune encompassing Nam, Bắc, and Đặng) rose up powerfully. Continuous demonstrations forced the puppet government to make concessions. In these movements, Comrade Bùi Thế Thuận always directly led and organized self-defense forces to support the people's struggle.
Faced with the vigorous growth of the movement, the French colonialists and their collaborators brutally suppressed it. Many cadres, party members, and ordinary people were arrested, tortured, and brutally murdered. Nevertheless, the revolutionary spirit of the people of Luong Son remained undiminished.
On the night of April 21st and the early morning of April 22nd, 1931, following orders from his superiors, Comrade Bui The Thuan directly commanded the Red Self-Defense Force to eliminate Deputy Village Head Dang Son – a henchman with a long history of bloodshed against the people. After this event, the enemy frantically surrounded and pursued him. They declared: If Bui The Thuan is not captured, they will wipe out the entire village.
Faced with a perilous situation, Comrade Bui The Thuan made a courageous decision: to return to his village, accepting the sacrifice to save the people and protect the revolutionary base. He proactively attracted the enemy's attention, creating an opportunity for his comrades to escape the encirclement. Ultimately, he was captured along with many others.

After days of brutal torture that yielded no information, on April 25, 1931, at Luong Son communal house, the enemy executed comrade Bui The Thuan and self-defense fighter Vo Van Thon. On April 28, 1931, they executed five more Red Self-Defense fighters.
Before falling, the soldiers remained steadfast in their belief in the victory of the revolution, proudly shouting:
"Long live the revolution!"
Long live the Communist Party!
The revolution will surely triumph!
That cry has become an enduring symbol of patriotism and unwavering faith. From this historical event, Luong Son became known as a typical "Red Village" during the Nghe Tinh Soviet Uprising.
The sacrifice of the seven revolutionary soldiers at Luong Son communal house further enhanced the glorious traditions of our homeland. They are shining examples of unwavering loyalty and indomitable spirit, ready to sacrifice for the independence and freedom of the Fatherland. In particular, Comrade Bui The Thuan – the first Party Branch Secretary – fully demonstrated the integrity of a communist, daring to accept death to protect the people and the revolution.

Ninety-five years have passed, but the spirit of Luong Son's "Red Village" remains as valuable as ever. It is a tremendous source of spiritual strength, reminding present and future generations to always cherish, preserve, and promote the glorious revolutionary traditions of their homeland.
